2000 SL2
ok so I fixed the wheel bearing last week so now i want to fix the other thing that is driving me nuts. When i accelerate i hear a loud metal on metal clanking/taping/banging/clicking sound ONLY in 1500 RPM to 2000 RPM range. The car drives great. 34 MPG highway etc... I thought it was the heat shield under the driver side since it was loose and touching the cat. Fixed it but no go. i checked all exhaust and it is secure. Anyway I am unable to locate what is making this noise. It only occurs when giving gas and is the worst when going up hill. Now my next thought is maybe the motor mounts? or bad trans mount? but the strange thing is it only does this after the car is warmed up. (about 10 minutes) before the car is warmed up no sound at all. This was also why i thought exhaust. I figured maybe when cold, the metal was still contracted and not able to bounce around etc... but now i am thinking MAYBE a richer cold fuel mixture changes the vibration pattern/ RPM range of vibration? oh i even had my brother stand on the road side as i drove by UP HILL to try and locate it but no luck other than "Sounds like it is coming from engine compartment" lol thoughts? thanks!!! |

Perhaps you need new brakes? Sometimes they'll make a metal on metal sound like the train on its tracks...

Serpentine belt tensioner worn out and hitting its end stop with a stretched/ floppy belt? If the belt flops around in a blur or depresses easily with your fingers, the tensioner is worn out. Replace the tensioner and belt.

Do you hear it when you rev it up to those numbers when the car is not moving?

the belt is new I put it on myself 10K miles ago. it was not loose then and last time i checked it was all tight etc... and it did this before and after the new belt. I will take a closer look and make sure though. thanks Last edited by ZepSL2; 11-27-2010 at 09:28 AM. |

now that i think about it the trans needs to be engaged so the load does not have to be much BUT whatever the problem it is 10 times worse when say going up a steep hill and i hit the 1.5 to 2.0K RPM range vs say coasting down a hill and then i hit the gas in that range. it only does this the when the car is warmed up. The first 10 minutes of driving it is all fine. interesting huh ![]() Last edited by ZepSL2; 11-27-2010 at 09:34 AM. |

just remembered that it only does this the when the car is warmed up. The first 10 minutes of driving no noise at all which is one thing that really has me perplexed.

Search the threads for pictures of worn out upper motor mounts where you can put your finger through the opening.
