Default Second Annual Knoxville/Tail of the Dragon meet, August 4-6

I seem to have lost my other thread, but the dates in it are incorrect anyways. I'm now working on planning a wedding so I've moved the dates around on the meet so that fotovue and I won't have to make two trips out there!

Because of the success of this year's meet in Knoxville, I'm eager to get started on the planning for next year. The Hyatt Regency in Knoxville has already contacted me saying they would like to be our host hotel!

The event will be similar to last year's, but with a more structured idea of what we're doing on Saturday (rather than just aimlessly wandering, like we did). I'm hoping to have an autocross event set up for that day that we can all have fun on.

Ideas, suggestions, comments, and compliments are welcome. If you are interested in attending, be sure to post here!

Oops. Just noticed the mixup. I said the Hyatt was the one interested in being our host hotel, but it is the airport Hilton.

Their website is www.hiltonknoxvilleairport.com and their normal rates are $89 a night. I don't know what kind of discount they'd be offering yet.

Resurrecting the discussion about this event. Feel free to post comments. I will be updating the website hopefully some time this week.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them here or email me at kat@redlineion.com.

A registration page will be available on the event webpage when it is updated, along with hotel reservation information as soon as I get ahold of it.

The event has been added to the SaturnFans calendar also.

Thumbs Up Re: Second Annual Knoxville/Tail of the Dragon meet, August 4-6

I can't wait until the meet this year. An autocross would be awesome. If there's anything that I can do to help, just drop me a PM. Also, on Thursday nights, there's what is known as the Thursday Night Street Fights at Bristol Dragway (aka Thunder Valley, if you may have heard it called by that name). It's something like $10 to enter and you just run your car against other street cars. It's something that looks pretty fun (I've never actually raced in it). I'm not sure if that would fit into anybody's schedule or if anyone is interested, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I would be interested in going, depending on finances and being able to get off of work. I have relatives in the Knoxville area and have been there a couple times all ready. And while I'm down there I could head over to NC and visit my cousin. I've been thinking of going down there anyways next summer so it could work out. I sure love going up into the mountains, and by then I will be able to test out my Vue in them. Since I didn't attend the first one, what sort of events are we talking about?

Just noticed the dates may be wrong for this, and on the website.

I'll check with Kat and see if this was supposed to be before, during, or after our wedding, on July 30th in the Smokey Mountains near the NC side of the tail.

We're planning on taking a cruise and leaving from florida that first week of august, so you can see where I think the dates may be off. also, the Turbo Saturns I think are meeting at the tail that weekend.

This thread's kinda old, I had to revive it, so i'll see what's going on.

I'd like to come, but I'll have to see about my finances....I planned on going to Spring Hill sometime in July, so maybe I can do both at the same time, hoping that they will have a tour in Spring Hill, if not I'll be pissed.

Okay, here's a brief run-down of what's going on and an idea of how the weekend will work. Now that it's getting closer to time I have a feeling the interest is really going to start ramping up.

The meet is scheduled for the same weekend as mine and fotovue's wedding. This keeps us, and many of our guests, from having to make two trips to the same area. Our wedding is scheduled for July 30, that Sunday, at 10:30 am with an informal reception to follow. ALL meet participants are invited to the wedding and reception - formal wear not necessary. After the wedding, Nick and I will definitely be doing a celebratory run on the Dragon. But the reason I bring this up is because I've been planning everything around the wedding, so the central part of the meet will be in Cherokee North Carolina, which is about an hour to an hour and a half from Knoxville.

All in all, this actually works out better for the Dragon and Smoky Mountains because it's much closer. Cherokee is mere minutes from the Smokies and maybe 20 minutes from the South end of the Tail. We have hotel reservations at a hotel in Cherokee that is set up at a group rate and will save you significantly over booking a hotel on your own. Because it is reserved under our last names, I would prefer not to publicly post the reservation information, but if you would like to stay in the hotel with us and would like the names it's under, please PM me or send me an email at kat@redlineion.com and I would be more than happy to give it to you.

Also, there are different activities in Cherokee than we experienced in Knoxville last year. We spent the majority of our time that weekend in the Smoky Mountains area anyway so it's much simpler to just move the meet southeast a couple miles and save on travel time. Plus we'll be staying in a hotel that's adjoined to the indian casino so there will be plenty of activities for the night owls, and the city of Cherokee will have plenty to do. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are about 30 minutes north of Cherokee and within easy access.

On Saturday, we'll probably do our 'toursity' day .. seeing the sights is usually pretty popular on most people's agenda, but nothing says we can't make a lap around the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway or set up some other sort of car-related event. We'll probably do like normal and have an informal "meet-greet-show off" in the hotel parking lot, because I've never been to a meet that that hasn't happened at.

Mostly, I don't want to plan a whole lot into this meet because I'm still working on wedding plans. However, I think it will turn out fairly similar to a lot of previous meets we've had - even if we don't stick to the schedule at ALL (which we never do) we'll still have a ton of fun. I think the most enjoyable part about these weekend outings is just hanging out with people who are interested in the same thing you are and know what you're talking about when you starting rambling on about your Saturn! We'll probably do most of our planning once we get there because that's how it usually goes. So if you're coming to the meet, plan on showing up Friday night or Saturday morning (the hotel is only reserved for Saturday and Sunday nights but I'm going to see about getting some rooms on Friday also because Nick and I will probably be there Friday night), seeing some great sights, driving some great roads, and meeting some amazing people.

For people who just want to be involved with the cars and running on the Tail of the Dragon, TurboSaturns.net is setting up their own event the weekend after ours, which was the weekend I had originally planned ours to be on but changed because of the wedding. They will probably strictly be doing car stuff - show offs, runs on the Tail, maybe a track day or dyno day. They've got planning going on over on their forums. In the past I've had complaints from people who don't want to do the warm fuzzy get-to-know you stuff, so now those people do have an alternative and will still be able to have their fun and those of us who are warm fuzzies can still do our thing too.

OK, so the event is actually at the end of July? The website still says August. Which is correct? If it's in August I can attend, but I'll be out of town at the end of July.

Will there be other events in the Knoxville/East Tennessee/Western North Carolina area this year?

I recently bought a 2006 Vue Redline and would live to run the Tail of the Dragon and test out my new baby....LOL
