Happy New to the forum.. and first Saturn!!

I was thrilled to see that such a forum existed for Saturn owners. I had recently traded my 92 Ford SHO in for a used 2000 LS2, the ford was getting expensive to maintain... anyway I love the peppy LS2 I was shocked when I first took it for a spin to find how peepy this engine is. I do have some questions that I hope someone here has some insight on and certainly do appreciate your time and advice.

Question 1: From insided the cabin of the car only at idle, it sounds like the engine either has an exhaust leak or a noisy engine component (sounds like a deisel engine). I had returned the vechile to where i purchased it and they said that the noise is typical for the saturn V6, they claimed that the car is fine, no exhaust leak, but a noisy emmsions valve thingy near the airfilter box that is normal. Now they are not a Saturn dealership and I really dont buy that the car should be sounding that way. Do others experiancec this as well, is it typical? The car is running fine otherwise no warning lights or anything.

Question 2: Gas milage, I either have a faulty gas guage or the car gets about 14-15 miles per gallon for typical driving, my commute consists of mailnly highway with a few stop and goes through town. My 92 Ford for the same commute was getting 22-24 miles per gallon. I did notice on the Saturn when the fuel light comes on and I fill it up it is only taking about 9-10 gallons of fuel, is it common to have a 3- 4 gallon reserve when the light comes on?

Specs:
2000 Saturn LS2 V6, traction control, ABS, Automatic
35k miles, car was a lease car and was well maintained.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Welcome to the boards!

The ticking noise is a common issue, I believe there is a TSB concerning it.

The first year L series only came with a 12 or 13 gallon tank, my low fuel light doesn't come on until I have less than < 1 gallon left.

The ticking noise is the evaporator purger bracket, I believe. It was just mounted in a bad spot. They can pull it off and remount it elsewhere with a new bracket. It doesn't cause any mechanical problems, it's just annoying.

I had them do that while my L200 was in for some other stuff.

1. If it sounds kind of like a sewing machine, it is the sound of the fuel injectors opening and closing. The sound travels thru the fuel lines that are attached to the firewall on the passenger side. There is a TSB for a new fuel line clip. It isn't hurting anything. I can barely hear it on mine at idle. Goes away as soon as I give it some gas.

2. 14 mpg is way low. With the V6 I am getting 24mpg to and from work. 14 miles or so on the freeway and 2 or so on surface streets. During the summer with the AC on I was getting about 20mpg. On 1 trip to Huntington beach I got 31 mpg while averaging 70 mph. The fuel tank on a 2000 only holds 13 gallons. My light comes on with 1-2 gallons left.

Thumbs Up Thanks for the responses!!

At least I will have some peace of mind knowing that the sounds are not hurting anything. I do need to figure out why it is so bad on Gas. For grins and giggles during my last tankful I put premium fuel (93octane) and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and I got about 50 more miles out of the tankful then usuall. I dont want to have to put premium gas in it just for better mileage.. it's almost 2.00 per gallon here in NH

I am courious if the Oxygen sensors are working properly, if they were any cheaper I would just replace them, they are quite expensive.

Any other Ideas on improving gas mileage other than the obvious?

Also, What is this "performance" chip that I have heard about what does it do?

Thanks again everyone.
