Default 2000 SL1 randomly idles really low

Haven't had many problems with my SL1 for years. Then yesterday, I was pulling out of the driveway, when it started idling really low. I gave it some gas and it was fine, but every once in a while at a stop light, it will idle crazy low, like 500rpms. Almost like it's going to die. For a second, it feels like it does die.

I got it home and ran my OBD scanner. No warnings or codes. It say all is fine.

Any ideas?

Ideas would be IAC valve or TPS.

Both are inexpensive and easy to replace. Right atop the throttle body.

Standard Motor Products packages a spare set of screws with one of their options, which i appreciated, after dropping a screw.

mine does that from time to time, after a few cycles it will light the SES light, code is EGR valve related. In my case, the EGR Valve was dirty. To see if that is your issue, take the care out on the highway and keep it in a lower gear and drive it at 4000 RPM for a minute. That will force any stuck dirt out of the EGR Valve. If this corrects your issue, it is best to then take the EGR valve off and clean it. See video on removing and cleaning. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt5lRTt6BsU

Even though it may not be the issue, would not be a bad idea to make sure you have the updated ect sensor and clean corrosion free connector. If it were me, I would pull the throttle body off and clean it good or you could leave it on the car and clean it if you don't have a new gasket handy. My 97 a few years back had an issue very similar where I had to feather the gas turning corners because it felt like it was going to die. Cleaning the throttle body cured it. There is a possibility of an EGR issue as well, but I would try the cleaning of the throttle body first.

I took the throttle body off and cleaned it up. It was sticking a bit.

Also, I replaced the IAC valve and TPS.

I noticed my old one was stuck open. Look at the comparison below: (new on the left)

I put it all back together, and now it revs up and doesn't come back down to idle. The only thing that stops the increase in RPM's is turning the key off.

Is my valve faulty? I would expect to see some movement in my new valve, but maybe I'm wrong. What does a good valve supposed to look like.

Your valve is fine... start it and let it run. It will take a couple of minutes for the new valve to adjust out and bring the idle down.

If this doesn't cure your idle issue then check the plugs, wires, and coils.

Thanks for your advice. I read your post, reassembled everything again and fired it up. It high idled for about 45 seconds, then gradually went down to normal idle speeds.

I drove it around all night and everything is back to normal. Thanks for all the help on this.
