The fix for any manual trans issue like what you are talking about is to locate a low mileage 01-02 transmission. The OEM rings and shift fork pads only come in a complete overhaul kit which doubles or more the price you are seeing. There are 6 pads and they are about 5$ each and each forward gear has a blocking cone, what you are calling a synchro, the replacement is brass and the OEM is steel with a auto trans breaking material liner so it actually works. The complete kits were over 375 last time I looked and it still is not all wear parts.

You could go to P&P and grab any 5 speed that looked good and felt tight on half price day for 100-125 and swap parts for much less money. This trans is easy to rebuild. Hunt4Steve and Bumpdraft have good threads on what is involved for a good complete overhaul and a SOHC low mileage trans would supply all the pads and rings you need if your gears are good.

Package will go out Monday.

As a training/experience exercise the parts shuffle would be more rewarding as you get to measure and inspect followed by the educated guessing.

OldNuc,
Thanks for the info. So any SL or SL1 manual transmission will have compatible parts except for the gears?

Gen 2 and 3 are better as newer but yes in those generations all parts swap and even 5th, 4th, 3rd swap. !st & 2nd also but more work to match up the gear sets. These are actually gear pairs so at a minimum you swap say the 5th drive and driven gear. A couple are cast as common such as 3&4 so you would have to swap both pairs at the same time. Finding a 02 that has no miles on it is possible if a SOHC. A synchronizer assembly is the hub, 2 blocking rings, selector ring, and 2 D springs. What wears out is the braking material on the blocking ring and the fork pads. Worn pads make lost motion between the fork and the selector ring. Worn blocking ring material makes gear grind and blocked shifts. Bad shaft bearings make bad bearing noises and loud gear whine. There are needle bearings in any free rotating gear and those also wear with age. The needle bearings are made of unobtainablum, or gold.
