Default Saturn SL1 Idle Issues

I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 which after driving an hour to work and putting the car in park, the RPMs would jump to around 2500. After receiving some advice, I removed the throttle body, IACV and TPS and thoroughly cleaned all of them. Put it all back together and the car runs like it is right off the show room floor if not better. I parked the car and it sat for about a week and when I started it most recently, the RPM stayed at 0, the tach would rise as the throttle was increased but as soon as I let off the gas, tach returned to zero. Car still runs great but tach does not seem to be working correctly, any ideas?

You cleaned the throttle body, but not the TPS, right? A TPS is electronic and can not be cleaned, except maybe cleaning off the wires. You may have damaged a wire or the TPS itself may be faulty.

That is my initial guess.

The normal check for a faulty TPS is if the car is idling high, turn the car off and then turn it back on. If the car idle returns to normal, that is an indication your TPS is faulty.

The serial connection to 3rd gen clusters can be problematic. Sometimes, my tach does not start until a few seconds after the engine has already started. Not one to get annoyed by such things, I've never attempted to fix it. Others will provide more advice on what you can do to get the tach working consistently again.

UPDATE- Just drove the car and now the tach seems to be working fine. Would the car sitting idle (no pun intended) for a few days have any bearing on this issue?

I wish I could report that my lazy tach episodes happen only after a period of inactivity, but I'm just not sure. Nonetheless, your issue seems to be tach related, not engine related, so if it has self-corrected, drive on!

Tach issue is only when at a stop, when I am in the throttle, tach seems to operate fine, coem to a stop, tach drops to zero but car idles fine.
