Roll Eyes clunk when ending a right turn

For the last week or so, I've been experiencing this lound clunk/crunch when returning the wheel to center after making a sharp right turn, and cannot seem to locate a source.

I do not believe it to be from the CV, as it will do it when stopped, and isn't the typical "clickity - clickity" one hears when they go out anyway.

The sound is more of a stuck or slightly jammed screw or bolt being unbolted that gets hung up and then lets go. I checked for issues with the tie rod rubbing the splash shield, but there is no visual evidence for this. (it's never the easiest thing, is it?)

I haven't really started tinkering with it, but thought I would throw some electrons out into cyberspace and get ideas of what to look at/for.

I already plan to check out the outer tie rods and ball joints (even though they are a year and ~16k miles old). I am a little worried that this could be a steering rack/gear issue, which doesn't sound like all that much fun.

Every time I read a post like this I can't help but think about hearing that noise in my car. It took me a while to figure out what mine was, but have a look at your lower control arm to cradle mounts. My LCA was sliding back and forth in that mount, causing a clunk when returning to center, or sometimes moving the steering wheel a certain way. New LCA and pinching the mount tighter solved the problem completely.

Knowing these cars are all built the same I can't help but think that is your problem.

For testing, shove a prybar in there and try to slide the lower control arm back and forth in the cradle mount.

The front end in my car is quiet as a mouse now after fixing that, and replacing the struts (galloping horse noise)

Happy Re: clunk when ending a right turn

Jack vehicle up one side at a time with tire a couple inches off ground.
Use a jack stand , put a pry-bar at the 6 o clock position under the tire.
Check your upper & lower ball joints by lifting up & down & take notice of any free play or sound.
Then check inner & outer tie rods by moving wheel with your hands from left to right.

Place your hands in 3 & 9 o clock on tire & slightly see if there is any play from left to right...

Better to have someone do it for you, while you look under car...

Check Pitman arm & all steering & suspension this way...
Then check other tire...
You should find the problem.
Good luck

Pitman arm? Yeah, better check the kingpins as well, and the choke.

Thanks, it was much, much simpler then all of that. The small piece of splash shield in the wheel well that gives access to the oil filter had slipped down (or wasn't reinstalled quite right) and was rubbing on the inner tie rod boot. Couldn't see that with the tire in the way. All is well with the world again! Now just back to hearing the damn quick strut creak.

Buddy, you just need to take a good ribbing on the internet... and all we're doing is making sure we don't spread misinformation and mislead the OP.
