Default S-Series Trans Fluid type???

Hi all,
I just have a quick, easy question. The Owners manual for my 2001 S-Series Wagon says to use "Saturn Transaxle Fluid". It also says "DEXRON III" may be used, but shift feel may be affected and I have to change it every 30, 000miles if I substitute the DEXRON. Is there really any difference???

Might be a moot point since, AFAIK, you can't buy Dex III anymore.

I'm assuming you're talking about an automatic transmission the manual transmissions also require Saturn ATF or Dex III.

I've read here that Dexron VI is marginal but acceptable for use in the automatic transmissions. It does have a different (lower) viscosity (at 100C, iirc) than Dex III. Here's some discussion on viscosities
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=140665 and there is more if you want to search

I don't know how much "Saturn Transaxle Fluid" costs or it's change interval, but given the costs of a transmission, I'd probably go for a good synthetic (I have a manual transmission and went with Mobil 1 as that is what was available) and change the ATF and filter every 30k miles.

This is a How To for changing the ATF and there's another How To in the How To library here.

There might even be a video How To on YouTube (by richpin06a). This is a simple DIY for a novice

dlacacres --

I'm not sure how many miles are on your Saturn and whether you plan to keep it a long time. If you do, you might consider changing your existing ATF to a full synthetic ATF like Castrol/BP/Allison's Transynd or Amsoil's ATF.

Transynd costs ~$35/gal at GMC/Allison truck repair depots, is fully DEXIII compatible, and will run for 100K miles in a truck transmission.

I think with a good WIX or OEM filter, you should be good for 100K miles easy, probably longer.

Amsoil ATF is a near clone of Transynd, costs the same or a little more.

Transynd is working well in my Manual Transmission as well.

I've been wondering this too since its coming up on 10K since my tranny fluid was changed and this fail-o-matic needs to last till I'm out of college. I was just going to end up putting mobile 1 synthetic in and hoping for the best since you cant get dex III anymore.

my Saturn(s) are 5-speed manuals and I can't say that I noticed anything when I went from OE Saturn transaxle fluid to Valvoline Dexron III ATF.

I've been using Castrol synthetic dextron IV. It's about $7/quart at the auto parts store.
