Default "Not-Ready" Inspection Rejection

I have seen posts on this throughout the forums, but being a newbie here I'd like to provide my details in hopes someone can point me quickly in the right direction. I have a 1998 SW2, 221K miles, runs like a clock. My mechanic told me today that it will not pass inspection in North Carolina due to a "not-ready" rejection.

The report he gave me summarizes the monitors:

Misfire - Ready
Catalyst - Not Ready
Secondary Air System - Not Available
O2 Sensor Heater - Ready
Fuel System - Ready
Heated Catalyst - Not Available
A/C System - Not Available
EGR System - Not Ready
Comprehensive Component - Ready
Evaporative System - Not Ready
O2 Sensor - Not Ready
Other - Not Available

From what I've seen on this forum, there are commonly inspection problems related to the coolant temperature sensor, the thermostat and/or the amount of fuel in the tank. I would also note that I had the crank position sensor replaced in March 2009 and a full tune-up in February 2009.

Any suggestions? I would love to get by simply replacing the coolant sensor and/or the thermostat, but that seems too easy. And did I mention that I'd rather be strangled than take my car to a dealer? I have been with the same mechanic for 13 years and don't wish to go elsewhere...

Thanks so much.

'not ready' doesn't mean there is a problem, it means the computer was cleared and you have not had enough drive cycles yet for it to make a determination for those systems. Did you disconnect the battery recently?

As Low Satrun says above, you gotta run it to do the full driving cycle so the ECM can run the full bag of diagnostics.

As to the ECTS, it may or may not be an issue. You should make sure you have a good, new type with a good connector in any case.
