I found a few old threads concerning the cracked heads on SOHC engines. Several of the posters are qualified Saturn techs with lots of experience. It turns out that Saturn had determined that there were casting/metallurgical issues in the head which were also at fault. Then, as OldNuc discovered, there was the head-torqueing issue as well. threads: SOHC engine Head Cracks http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16384 http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21019 http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23424 |

I have a lot of respect for OldNuc and the others that made a lot of these posts however I recently posted on the SL1 rebuild thread
Heads can and do crack however I suspect most of the bad heads have long since failed. Keep your temp in check and you'll be fine. I never let my temp get above 5/8 on my gauge before I cycle the a/c to make the fan run. The miles I have speak for themselves. Highmile '95 SL1 718k and counting |
