Default CV Axle replacement: transmission fluid replacement question

Aloha!

First post....

Model: 2003 VUE V6 3.0L 2WD Automatic
Fluid: Dexron-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid

I'm trying my hand as a first time DIYer and took on some overhaul of my driver side wheel area to replace: wheel hub; sway bar link; tie rod end; and cv axle.

While replacing the axle, I was ready to catch the transmission fluid when I pulled the CV axle free of the transaxle. I lost a tad more than 1-quart that needs to be replaced and I want to make sure I have this part of the procedure correct. I was using the Haynes Repair Manual and a couple of helpful YouTube videos, but they are a bit vague on the refill portion.

1) Do I replace the fluid through the dipstick port just forward and below the engine?

The procedure I was going to use is:
- Idle engine for ~3-5 min
- shift through all gears, stopping at each for 10 sec, end at PARK
- check fluid level
- Add transmission fluid a little at a time, carefull not to overfill

2) What level do I want to fill to according to the dipstick?

Any help from you seasoned veterans will be greatly appreciated!

Mahalo!

Knew that dipstick looked familiar. Same as my Volvo C30. So it's an Aisin transmission? There should be a fill plug at the top but you might have to take off a bunch of stuff to get to it. Quicker to fill through dipstick hole. Problem is most funnels are too large. If you go to any auto glass shop, you can get the nozzle they use for the glass adhesive and it works great as an adapter for a funnel.

Yes - there is no other Fill Port. Some additional details in this thread . . .

PS - you would be well-advised not to let any "Quickie Lube" type place change your Oil Filter. They invariably over-tighten the cap, it jams, and you wind up with a major repair on your hands. That cap only needs to be slightly snug.

Real quick...not sure if anyone else saw this, but the 2002 and 2003 V6 Vue's with the Aisin 5 speed transmission DO NOT use Dexron VI.

They use ATF T-IV. GM dealers sell T-IV in a relabeled bottle at a markup, so you can definitely get it from a GM dealer if needed.

The cheapest place I've found to get T-IV is from your local Toyota dealer. It's usually about $5 a quart.

Dexron VI is a very thin ATF compared to T-IV, so I would be concerned about replacing the T-IV in an Aisin transmission with Dexron VI.
