I'm looking to replace tires before the winter. A local shop has an "all tires of the same diameter, one price" event on.
I'm looking to stay on the 14" rims as I really don't have $$ to upgrade. What is the max width that I can put on the stock rims?? I'm thinking about putting some 195/65/14 on it. Car is a '94 SL1.

195/65 will work fine.
That is what I use on my steel rims with winter tires.

Thanks. I've heard of tire shops just using a chart and telling you that you will use a certain size for that car. Just didn't want to get stuck with that as I would like a little wider tire.

My friend has 205/65/14 on his 94' SL1. It comes a little close but it never rubs. Its about 2 inches between the top of the wheel and the panel and an inch between the wheel and the front bumper.
Attached is a (poor quality) picture of his car with the tires and some rims he got from a friend. The picture may not show it, but it has a very tucked appearence. EDIT: Didn't want to attach, so here is a link: http://www.fonoop.com/car/a9saturn.jpg

Be very careful with the 205 tires. Different rims have different offset, and the stock rim may sit in too far to allow the 205 to not rub on the struts.
You will need at least .75" clearance between the strut and the inside of the tire (with your 175 tires). Check both front and rear tires, as they are not the same. |

upsizing insanely on narrow stock wheel may not be a good idea for another reason. The tire's contact patch is severely effected if is on a rim which is too narrow.
