2000 L-Series 3.0L Wagon
Sad Need quick help - replacing power steering pump and water pump on V6Ö.

I took my 2000 LW2 into the dealer and they quoted me $633 for the power steering pump and $560 for replacing the water pump. Also, since it was past due for inspection they failed it because of the steering pump. I really canít afford a $1,200 hit right now, but I also need the car.

Are these exorbitant rates for replacing these pumps? Unfortunately I left my repair manual in the car so I donít have any idea what is involved in replacing these. I donít have much experience in car repair but I did once replace the water pump in my old Camaro in about 30 minutes with a $25 remanufactured part. From looking at the 3.0L engine, Iím not sure if this is something that I could do. I donít know anything about power steering pumps, not even where it is.

Does anyone have any experience with these issues?

Thanks!

p/s pump prolly just needs a shaft seal. The water pump should be replaced with the timing belt. I would not recommend that you do it since you do not have the proper alignment tools.

Thanks for your responses. That engine just looks far too daunting for me so I ended up taking it to another mechanic and they replaced both pumps for $800.

I saw your post so I called them and asked about the shaft seal and the timing belt. They said they only charged $60 for the ps pump so it was easier to just replace it and they said the timing belt looked fine, but that they replaced the serpentine belt because it was badly cracked. Is it a problem that they didn't replace the timing belt?

On a rather pathetic side note, the guy there said that they all were amazed by the sheer number of seemingly random work orders and repairs that I have accumulated in this car in just over 40,000 miles. He said they wished that all cars would generate so much business!

Yes the timing belt should have been replaced. It gets contamintated from the coolant leaking on it.

You would have saved labor on timing belt change if it was done along with water pump. Apparently they reside very close by. But at 40k, its not recommended unless it was damaged somehow.

It was Coolant + belts = very early failure.
