Default Silly Saturn Trivia Questions

I was perusing through Wikipedia, and had the great idea to check out Saturn and on the S, series page, which is very interesting and I wouldn't be suprised if it was written by a forum member, I was very disillusioned by two points:

1. it said that the 95 Saturn was the most stolen car in 2003 because of a flaw that allows one to use a screwdriver to start the car. I have a 97 and use a key that is so worn out that it might as well be a screwdriver. Does that mean someone could use one to start my car?

2. When I bought my car new all those years ago, I was told by the dealer that the suspension on my sl was based on some sort of racing suspension. Is this true?? I saw no mention of this on wikipedia, and they had just about everything else. Does anyone know?

1. The worn key for my '02 SC1 opens the door of, and will start the engine of my best frien'ds '92 SC. (It's formally my sister's car, but we didn't discover this fact until he locked the keys in it).

2. That's crap. It's a good suspension for AutoX, but it's not based on any sort of racing suspension. The SOHC cars don't even have rear sway bars.

What dealers say leaves impressions on some people. My grandpa, 93 years old, has a grand marquis the salesman said had a (Lincoln) "Continental motor." (True, same 4.6 in both.) Get him talking and "It's got a Continental motor, I keep it tuned up."

The 4 wheel independent suspension is an advantage over the beam axle comparable escorts of the same time had. Easy to find a fully independent suspension in, say, a rally racer, and apply that benefit to the car.

There is some risk of theft; I opened a hatch on a junkyard saturn on a whim with the key to my own car. If you can remove your ignition key with the car running that implies "slop" that could make such universal keying easier. Theft risk also applies to demand for parts; our s-cars are so interchangeable and "special" the demand is there.

1. yeah I remember the hysteria this caused. I was at my Saturn retailer eating pizza, watching TV when they made that announcement on the news. they are easy to dismantle too. a screwdriver and a 10mm socket can take most of them apart.
2. the front system consists of MacPherson struts devised by Earle MacPherson at Ford of England. the Porsche 911 used them. the rear suspension is Chapman struts which is basically a MacPherson strut adapted for a rear suspension by Colin Chapman who used it on the original Lotus Elite.

they might mean the basic design. meaning; it's a fully independent rear suspension. the lateral links were pretty much unheard of in an econo car back then. everything had a solid beam. even with no swaybar, that was a unique setup for awhile...

As in Ford Escort? I know the 95 Escort has 4 wheel independent suspension...

just about any honda key 80 to 95 or 98 will eather open the doors or start any honda of thos years. in fact the key for my buddies 90 civic worked better in his moms 92 accord and the key for his girlfriends 94 civic worked the best on all 3 cars.

the key thing is very comon.

as for cars that are easy to steal VW's from the late 70's to 92 are a joke. if the door handle dosen't fall off on its own it can be knocked off with a stick, the colum lock is made of butter and the ignition wires could be jumped from the fuse panel.

I had an 85 jetta the original owner said it got stolen 3 times!

i had to hot wire it twice (i lost the key) it had no door handles (rust) and the trunk lock/release button is held in with the cheapest spring clip i have ever seen (when old it pops out very time you press it)

dont worry too much about your car. the most likely would be theif will be a joyrider and the CLUB is sufficient to foil a Joyrider.

If it isn't broken.........Your not trying hard enough
