Default Another P0420 code

From another post

The front and rear O2 sensors can be replaced without having to replace the converter but you will still get the P0420 code.

99.9% chance that you have a bad converter. Unless you have an exhaust leak in the front pipe.

From the service manual:

Probable causes of a DTC P0420 are:

Exhaust system leaks between the front and rear sensors or rear sensor leaking
Catalyst deteriorated due to excessive time operating the vehicle with a catalyst damaging misfire
Contamination of the converter due to incorrect sealant, fuel, or fuel additives.

If you are able to rule out the exhaust leak then the converter has likely died due to one of the other two things.

Ok, no leaks, I'm thinking the cat is shot (at 93k???)
Mine doesn't misfire, runs good, burns a quart every 3k, use no fuel additives besides what they put in the pumps, no engine work (sealant) done. The only thing I do is run full synthetic, and put MMO in 4-500 before an oil change. Is this a normal life for these cats, or did I do somthing wrong
BTW 99sl1 no engine mods.

...
If it ain't broke it's over designed.

If it's running okay, get under there an shake the cat and see if it rattles. If it's not running okay, pull the front O2 sensor out and take it for a noisy spin. If it's better, you have a clogged cat.

There is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action.

Well seems to run fine. Need to turn the A/C (AKA Jake Brake) off going up big hills, but it's a SHOC. Revs up good, heard no rattles.

Anyone know if the CA emmisions cats die faster?

I put "DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency" into Search and came up with wolfman's response in a past thread; http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...Low+Efficiency

Replace the rear O2 sensor when everything else is ruled out. Certainly worth the minimal expense as compared to replacing the catcon.

Rather than buying OEM unless you insist on it, you can try online for the part/price check with http://rockauto.com, Autozone for original or generic like Bosch that would require splicing the wiring that makes it much cheaper, or any other online parts places, NAPA, etc.. Try http://saturnparts.net for OEM parts and numbers.

I got that code the other day and it went away, funny thing is the code came up right after using cheap fuel (Sheetz, I believe). Now that I have decent fuel in it, the code hasn't seemed to come back. But I'm still checking. I had my friend somewhat test my cat when I got that code, he said according to the temperature of the thing and the fact it didn't rattle, it most likely isn't bad, funny thing is I would expect mine to go bad anyday now because I have almost 150k and my car has been misfiring ever since I can remember, LOL.
