is it an automatic? If so, then use the same year. I'm not sure what years are interchangable, but manual trannies are compatible for all years.

...
2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon -> daily & toy =)
2009 BMW 128i -> sold
2003 VW GTI 1.8T -> wrecked
1998 Saturn SL2 -> parted out
1995 Saturn SL2 -> sold
1995 Saturn SL2 -> sold

The PCM controls the transmission, and uses calculations based on specific gear ratios. It'll screw up (throw a code) if you put in an auto tranny with diffrent gear ratios because it knows its not calculating what it should be.
The manuals are diffrent because, other then the speedometer (maby), the PCM dosn't care what it is.

Here's a page that should help:
http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...gearratio.html
looks like '98 ->'02 would be the best bet, if I'm understanding the page right.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

Doesn't even matter wrt the speedometer. This is because the VSS is on the OUTPUT side of the tranny (think about it; it wouldn't work on the input side, it would fail in neutral or with the clutch disengaged).

[Edit - weird - look what the forum is doing with fido's "handle" in the quote.....]

I didn't think it did, but I figured if it cared about anything with it the speedometer would be the thing to screw up.

Oh...I just figured out why my username get's "****"'d when quoted...lol
