Default 96 SL2 power trunk latch

Mine just failed and I get a change in voltage if I raise the lever or push the key fob. That would lead me to believe the actuator isn't working, but wow are they hard to find.

The key can't turn the barrel to manually do it either, is it the barrel or just how the electric trunk release work.

Thanks

A GEN3 will not fit a GEN2. The part number for the GEN2 is 21170645 and it fits 96-99 Sedan and Coupes.

I have one on my 99 parts car I'd be willing to sell. Cross border shipping would be roughly $17 though but if I recall you're in Victoria. Shipping is about the same to Victoria BC.

With my '97, I can still stick a key into the trunk to open it, even with the battery out

Never looked into it, but have read some posts saying there is an arm or something in the latch that can get bent/damaged from things in the trunk hitting it over time that will prevent it from unlatching. I think they said it is observable if you fold down the seats and wiggle in on your back into the trunk.

I was planning on eventually replacing it with a manual release from a later year

That site links you to a bunch of other GM Parts sites. The first 2 didn't actually have the part.

Using Parts Voice it looks like Hanlees Davis Chevrolet in Davis, CA 95616 has one in stock.

Thanks for all the heads up. The wires and rod are in good working order, the barrel just doesn't turn. I'll check the other car as it seems the key isn't going in all the way. If I could get it to turn I wouldn't care about the electric part. It's a pretty nice 96 with only 140K and not burning oil yet.

Had a similar problem on my 1995 SL1. Previous owner always used the interior trunk release and over the years the lock froze and would not work with the key. I sprayed WD40/PB BLASTER for a few days and worked the lock 7 years later still OK!! May be worth a try!
