In the single relay mod with DRLs disabled, where is the diode installed? In the steering column?

Put it across the relay coil.

So, the diode is between pins 85 & 86. My electricity knowledge is reasonable but my electronics knowledge is novice. A diode only allows electricity to flow
one way, as I recall.

I'll have to look to see which pin is ground and which is hot. I'm assuming I'm installing the diode to allow flow from ground to hot and not the other way. So, I'm blocking hot to ground on the coil, correct? What diode rating is required?

Diode must be rated for the maximum voltage it will ever see. Add some for a safety margin. Example, 12V circuit is normally more like 12.6V, even up to almost 15V if in the charging circuit. I would put a diode rated minimum 20V. In this case it is for suppressing a collapsing field arc, I think, in which case you probably want several hundred volts ratings.

Dragging this one back from the dead

I did this mod on my 3rd gen with a single relay by using a diode

Apparently when the lights are off the grounded side of the headlights goes positive and the parking light positive goes to ground

Would this still work on a second gen (1998) SL2 if I've disable the DRL with the "bending a prong over on the relay" method?

Sure would just make sure the diode is the right way before you permanently affix it

test ahead of time by checking that the brown wire of your side marker light shows + (positive) when the parking lights are on and - (negative) or nothing when they are off

Pretty sure I did exactly the same to my 96 but thats been a lifetime ago

I just did this yesterday on my 2002 and I went in on the drivers side
corner had it done in under an hour

Do not use those wire destroying taps or t-taps
either strip the wire and wrap your new wires on to the exposed
conductors solder them and seal them very well

or cut the wires and use good butt connectors with heatshrink built-in
the wires seem kinda tight so probably the harder way to go
Either way you don't want water getting in and corroding the wires

Last make sure you stagger the joints so the harness still fits in the loom after taping it up

Oh I despise those T-taps... Not only do they destroy the wire, but they make a very sketchy connection at that... I'm a firm believer in soldering and heat shrink

I may have to give this a try. I need dig into the front and look into why my fog lights have stopped working anyhow..
