I was collecting cars, took all of them to the scrap yard though. The first few I did not save enough parts off of (forgot about many usable parts), so the last one we took the subframes out. I have multiple doors, blown motors, etc

I went the other way. After denting three of four OEM rims in ten years of NYC roads I decided to replace them. Recycling paid me $33 for 60 lbs of rims - it paid the taxes (and then some) for new rims. My two car garage fits one car and no room for collecting junk.

I have a bunch of horded parts. Most of them are stuff I'd give away to someone who might need it. Other parts are only used as "templates/models" to see the part. - Like a spare P/S bracket so I can know where the () bolts are located.
A spare wireing harness does wonders for electrical trouble-shooting...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If anyone needs motivation to horde flawless parts they might see in a junkyard:
Go over to e-bray and look at O.E. parts prices
(helpful hint: do not sign in and accidentally press "buy it now" The seller will get the part in the mail so fast your bank account will have a heart attack! ...but, they will not read the three e-mails you frantically send trying to tell them to cancel the order)
My personal favorite :
Saturn GM OEM 94-02 SC2 Drive Axles-Front-Damper 21012599
#2 on Diagram Only-Genuine OE Factory Original Item
US $232.80 (cheap!)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Saturn-GM-OE...3D200998019260
^That puts the $25 air dam spring I received from e-bray Florida to shame!
...
Competition Clutch 10Lb. Flywheel. 14 stalls to date (and loving it).
Bumpdraft, I know you have an entire engine on the shelf lol
As far as I go, I keep stuff that could be used again or emergency duty only, since I have 2 and everything interchanges for the most part. If and when parts get hard to acquire the will simply enter into the if its a large outlay it will now be terminal phase of their lives.
Course I just bought a plasma cutter for working on the Formula, so the subframes will be getting rust cut out of them very easily now. MIG welder is standing at the ready as well.
Oh yah that . If you call a spare engine (and transmission) "hoarding" then I guess I'm hoarding
Besides those, it mostly because the stuff removed from the donor car is too good to throw away...sure beats hoarding cats!
When I was in my s-series prime, I had 2 or 3 of damn near every common failure item. Heck, I was even running a small business here via PM parts requests and turning a tiny profit. I probably sold 6 or 7 camshafts, few steering wheels, throttle bodies, and other random needed parts. It was my hobby to go junk yarding and pulling apart s-cars.
I gave all my spare parts away (even specific DOHC parts) with the recent sale of my SL1. I wish I had just posted up here and auctioned the whole lot to you guys for dirt cheap.
I had practically 2 of every sensor, switch, lighting sockets, certain harnesses like IAT/ECTS, EGR's, etc etc etc.
Basically had everything except an engine/trans so that any spontaneous failure would result in a spontaneous replacement and no more than 20-30 minutes of downtime.
Shame in that approach was I had about $200 in all those spare parts and honestly over the course of many many years of ownership, I only every used two parts. A door lock switch and a dome light bulb. lol
Murphy's law strikes again. With all those parts, it turns out you didn't need them. Don't compare your JY trip time to parts store time or you might feel like it wasn't worth it.
You are still hoarding some NGKs though aren't you?
The advantage of living in a condo - no room for parts.
Though, I still manage to keep in my storage room:
1) The original headlight assembly (right and left).
2) Three new OEM top motor mount bolts (decided to use originals)
3) Original thermostat housing.
4) A used (still in good condition) serpentine belt.
5) Original (never used - mint condition) floor mats (stored under my bed).
New owner report of 08/08/19: 234,408 Miles
Well some of us on here have a need to hoard parts
When you save three SL2s destined for the scrap yard, every odd and end you can think of needs replacing.
I've used transmissions, sensros, cv shafts, engines, and even complete interiors out of these hoarded parts
I'm not hoarding parts... I don't have a problem... Let's see we've got 2 new KYB GR2 struts/springs/mounts just waiting to be installed, 2 Cs130 alternators, 3 ICMs and coil packs, 1 transmission, 2 dogbone mounts, 1 top mount, 2 tires, 2 axles, several range selector switches, and if we include other vehicles then add another tranny, engine, 3 heads, more axles, differential, driveshaft, etc.
I'm not hoarding parts...
