Despite the negatives, the 3rd gens do run much smoother and more quiet. When I go from my 94 SW1 to the 2000 SW2 it's like getting into a new car. And the 50% increase in power is sweet. 3rd gens routinely reach the 200K mile plateau, and they are better on mpgs also.
If the seller also has the service/maintenance records, this sounds like a nice find. Nothing stopping you from offering $1500 either. What else are you going to find with 70K for that price and with this forum resource ?

Well, I currently own a 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo and the 97 Saturn so I can afford to insure 2 cars but not 3. Plus that would be silly to have 3 cars for little old me, lol . I got the Saturn specifically to keep the miles off my Fiat. So far it has saved 20k so I'm very happy with that.

Doggone it! I had pretty much talked myself out of considering the car, but then I went ahead and called the guy to get more details. He is the owner of the Tuffy repair shop seen in the pics. He bought this car from the original owner 6 months ago with the intention to fix it up some and flip it. He claims to have maintained this car for the original owner and has all receipts. He welcomed me to put the car on one of his lifts if I want to look under it as well as test drive it. He put new brakes and tires on it, as well as changed all fluids and says nothing is needed. He claims it doesn't burn oil though I doubt he really knows this. He might though since he says he's done all the oil changes. He has had trouble selling it because of the manual. He said if it was an auto, it would already be gone.

It does have one key fob and it works! He says he thinks it has ABS, but he wasn't sure since the car was at his shop and he's home. It has tint, important for Florida. I don't know......it sounds like he's motivated to sell and if he really has all these receipts, this car might be a steal!

If it will save you buying something else, it's a deal.

And really, regardless of how you maintain a car, something could die tomorrow. We often feel safer in cars we maintain ourselves and have some history on, but that doesn't mean they will never fail. You see it all the time here on the forums.

Buy the thing, dump the old one once you are confident in the new one.

Go buy it!

If I was near FL I would've already went and drove it and offered him $1,500 cash and brought it back to KY with me.

At 75k miles it's a steal.... and no, the KBB may not reflect that... but we all know how long these cars run and that even the little maintenance they require isn't extremely hard or invasive. Piss or get off the pot, man!

In all likelyhood, it's NOT burning oil. Yet. My '01 SL1 wasn't burning any at 99k when I picked it up, but when sold last month at 130k it started sipping it. Probably 1 quart per oil change. But since I checked oil at every fill-up, I would just put in 1/8 qt every few months.

Ok, so I drove the car and its in good shape. However, the car itself has 169k. The engine was replaced with one with around 72k. Most seals are new, as is the belts. The engine is smooth and very quiet. No smoke. Looked at it on the lift and looks clean. The CV axles are good. Brakes felt much better then my 97. Suspension was tight with no clunks. Remote keyless works, including the trunk popper. AC is good. Clutch pedal is light, much lighter then mine. Not sure if thats normal but it engaged fine. He won't go below $1800. Not sure it's as good of a deal since the mileage on car is so much higher. Any thoughts??

Was the engine rebuilt 72k miles ago, or was it replaced with a used engine with 72k on it?

what went wrong with the old engine... did you get a chance to look at the receipts/history and such?

Kind of unusual to need an engine replacement / rebuild with so few miles.

Lol, I'm almost at that many miles now!

His ad said 72k, the car has 169k... he didn't disclose that in the ad.

The guy selling it is a crooked SOB and you should've told him to go F himself for wasting your time with a deceitful ad.

That being said, you didn't... so now you just gotta decide, is the car (think of it as a 169k mile car) worth $1,800? Probably not.

I'd be much more cautious with the latest disclosure. As stated above, he didn't mention the engine replacement earlier. And if that shop in fact did all the maintenance, why did the engine need to be replaced at all?

Unless the records show a major failure beyond what proper maintenance would cause, I'd be very wary.

I didn't look at the receipts yet. The guy said it was customers car that he had repaired through most of its life so when the engine went, the owner didn't want to spend the money so I guess he bought it with plans to replace engine and sell it. It was a female owner, not being sexist here, but probably it was burning oil and she neglected to check it regularly if at all. The used engine came from car with 72k on it and had most seals replaced (main rear seal, valve cover seal, intake manifold gasket). It did drive nice but the mileage on car threw me.

I'm ALWAYS suspicious of someone trying to sell a car, especially when the engine was replaced so new. Tells you the original owner probably neglected it. Used cars are always a crap shoot.

But how do you talk a car freak out of buying a car?

LOL. Trust me, I was a little ticked about the mileage on car although the interior would lead you to believe its almost new. I did go home to ponder it further. I think you are right though. $1800 is a bit much to get a car with only 30k less miles on the body.

The other reason I walked away was because the twincam motor really didn't feel that much faster. I didn't rev it much though so maybe the extra power is felt higher up.

Hahahaha hahahaha . In my younger years, I would have walked away with the car. I'm getting smarter as I get older. Driving the old 97 Saturn home reminded me, you know, this old girl really does drive pretty smooth. Whats the hurry to replace her?

You're probably right, but...

Quote:

If the previous owner kept running it low on oil, and this guy did all the oil changes... why didn't he tell her to add oil? You'd think he would notice when he changed the oil that it was low... not much else kills these engines.

This is sounding shadier and shadier.

It is a nice looking car, and it may very well run great.

I'm going to roll over 170k miles in a few months....

Honestly, I had a bad experience with a Tuffy place in the past. The rear brake lines in my 1989 Toyota PU had split and the guy at Tuffy wanted $800 to replace just the rear brake lines. I walked.

Just my experience and I know that they are not all the same but I will never take my car to Tuffy.

Typical saggy headliner but otherwise OK interior and the guy has done 5K Mobil1 oil changes since he bought it new.

This would be purely for a commuter beater so I don't have to run up the miles on my A8 now that I do 65 miles a few times a week to the office. I swore I'd never spend a dime on a GM car again, but these things are so darned cheap to maintain.

Decisions...decisions....
Update: The neighbor sold this for $2500. I guess I didn't get back to him quickly enough. And while driving home today I saw a '97 SC2 with 5sp for sale for $1500. It was parked in the lot of one of those cheesy used car places not far from my office. The paint on the spoiler was a bit bleached and the bumpers had a fair amount of scuffs, but it was otherwise OK externally and had new tires. I had them start it up (sounded fine). The oil level was full, the AC worked, the manual trans fluid was full, power windows/locks worked, etc. I told them I'd stop by tomorrow for a quick test drive. The bad....It's f'ing purple. Ugh... And it's got a leaking sunroof and resultant saggy headliner. Easy to fix though...10 minutes to clear the drains, and a couple of hours to replace the headliner and remove all the ghetto caulk someone put around the glass. So if it's a decent driver I am seriously considering buying it just for commuting to work to save wear and tear on my other cars. It only has 79k miles on it. I figure that if I deal with the cosmetic issues and clean it up, I can always sell it and get at least what I paid out of it if I get bored with it.

Am I crazy? OK, don't answer that.

Sounds like a decent deal if the odometer can be trusted. See if he can put it up on a lift for you, or let you take it long enough to bring it to a shop. Ten minutes to clear the drains sounds a tad optimistic. Idk, the ladies tend to like a man in purple......
