Default Slight tapping when I first start up

I think my valves may just need re adjusting after she warms up in summer or winter/fall shes fine it stops. It started maybe 6 months ago. I did a oil change myself since my dealership charges like 60 for every thing and local auto shop had a deal on oil and filter i just picked up some stuff to flush out the system but its still there.
So is it something easly done if i need a slight valve adjustment or just take it to dealer and ask them what they can do?

the way this timing/valve system is, if it slipped you'd be in serious trouble. If it'll help you sleep better at night, you can check that all the timing marks are lined up, but it'll take a little work. Mine sounds a little odd compared to some higher end 4 cylinders at idle also, but once it warms up to 80F, I'm off without another noise. I wouldn't worry about it, these engines can sound a little clicky when idling, but so are most, it's actually the MPFI system tht clicks on my car, and every ford fucus the rental car companies have made me drive have done the same thing. open the hood and listen, if you have a stethoscope, locate the sound.

Well, assuming you knew what you were doing when you did an oil change, sounds like a case of the lifters. Get a can of BG MOA, its a additive that you put in the oil. It helps to reduce lifter noise. Try that you can do it before the next oil change. Or if you still have your warranty take it to saturn. Other than MOA (oh do this when the engine is hot). Another old school trick that I learned from the old timers is put a quart of ATF in there with the oil, run it for an hour 1/2 or drive it for a hundred miles, then flush it out and do an oil change. Should be as good as new with no ill effects.

Lifter noise is a common thing in modern chevys, for example my malibu. And you have a motor built basically all by GM even though the Ion came before the Cobalt.

This is required reading before adding anything to your engine but oil.

start it up when its cold and put your ear to the Valve cover, if its ticking then its lifters or you need oil lol... if not then check the injectors like the other guy said.

You don't need to listen to the valve cover to know if you need oil. Pull the dipstick. It can tell you. There is no need to adjust lifters on thes cars as they have hydraulic lifters. No adjustment necessary. More than likely you're either hearing noisy valvetrain (which is normal on these cars) or noisy injectors (also normal). You can always add an injector cleaner to your fuel-ups or pay for an injector cleaning service if this really bothers you. But this sounds like normal operation.

^^^

I was saying that if you can hear the tapping from the VC then you have lifter noise.... or you do not pay attention to your car and you should check your oil because you have none (I was making a funnay). durr.. As far as whether or not you have adjustable lifters; makes no difference as to whether they make noise, or do not make noise. And at that, I made no refference to adjusting the lifters.

they got you good, if you use a good oil, you never have to remove "gunk" (sludge), other things like additives and cleaners actually void the warranty on these engines as they often take away more than just sludge, if you're really worried about it, use castrol or mobil1, or even better, use synthetic, or drop your pan and scrape it out, but never do THAT again.

+1 most additives hurt more than help. Especially the cleaners.
