Has it always been on or is this a recent failure? A little history will help here.

It is highly possible you have a later model cluster in there. The 96 is slightly different that the 97-99 which do swap with no issues.
Is your upshift light on the right side or left side of the cluster as you look at it when in the drivers seat? Once the vintage of the cluster is determined you will be able to go from there and find the problem. Manual or automatic transmission? Last edited by OldNuc; 07-29-2018 at 07:49 PM. |

OK that should be correct for 96.
Do you have a manual or auto trans? |

OK, Let me take a look at the wiring diagrams and see what the problem could be.
Do you know where the PCM is mounted? It is on the left side of the car under the dash up against the left side up high. If you can look up under there you can see it. There should be a paper tag on the side you can see and it will say MANUAL or AUTOMATIC. You can usually get a decent pix of this with a cell phone. This is something else to check . |

Did that tag also have MANUAL printed on it?
The upshift lamp is driven directly from the PCM. Have you had all codes read yet and is either the service wrench or SES light on? Do they come on when the key is initially turned to ON but not crank? At this point there is a check for a grounded wire to the PCM or a defective PCM or Cluster. |

That is the correct PCM for your car.

P1650 is directly related to that light being on.
Do you have a DVM that is capable of checking for grounds? As you have the code it is highly likely that the problem is in the wiring between the cluster and the PCM only and the PCM is fine and not at fault. |

OP didn't say if there was a check engine light on or not but might lend a clue if it is.
Could this be a map sensor issue? maybe unplugged. Highmile 95 SL1 663k and counting |

There is no SES light as the tell-tail code, P1650, does not turn on any lights.

The SES light does not turn off until the engine is running and the key has returned to the after crank position.
