Sad MPG for 2009 Vue XE AWD

I recently purchased a (practically brand-new) 2009 Vue XE with AWD. When I look at the MPG it's supposed to get according to the lists at the Saturn/GM site it says it should get from 16 to 23 MPG. It has a panel that displays the average fuel economy in the car and it says only an average of 15.4 MPG. I've gotten an oil change and I'm only at 6500 miles on the car. I'm only getting 15 mpg. Why is my MPG so low on this nearly new car? And what can I do to improve it? It's way worse than the van I traded in for it. (BTW - I am NOT heavy on the pedal or brake at all) Any ideas??

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Give your Vue's engine some time to break in...you are only at 6,500 miles, that engine is barely worn in. I would imagine that as you keep racking up the miles, your mileage will begin to improve. Also, unfortunately most '08 and '09 Vue owners seem to have found that the EPA ratings on the window sticker seem to be very generous. I would likely blame this on the fact that the tests are done under more or less perfect conditions that are nearly impossible to achieve in real world driving. Also, the '08 and '09 Vue is pretty heavy by small crossover standards due to its frame design and safety features, which certainly doesn't help its fuel economy. Just try to give it some time to wear in and try to drive as conservatively as possible to try and reach those EPA numbers.

I suspected that this engine combination worked too hard in the 2008-09 VUE's chassis. The parasitic load from the AWD system doesn't help either.

Keep your tire pressures on the high side, and use synthetic oil. Mobil 1 is a good choice.
