Default 07 Aura

The AM portion of the radio is noisy and won't pick up stations 20 miles away.

When you turn on the rear window defogger, it makes static on the radio AM.

Even two of the local channels have static in the background.

ANy ideas. The radio in my old 2000 LS1, had a great radio even the AM would pick up stations at least 100 miles away.

It sounds like your problem may be related to a bad ground, however, there have been issues with the radio that are well documented in other threads on this web site, so you can search and see if you think they are relevant to your issue. Certainly there is now a fix. If you research the threads, I believe there is a Technical Bulletin issued for similar issues

Some window tints contain metal that will interfere with the radio antenna (built into the rear window). The problem will be most acute on AM or when the rear defroster is on. I had this happen two Epsilons ago and learned my lesson.

The dealer hooked up a regular car antenna to the radio with a antenna adapter. That morning we could pull in 35+ AM station with no static. Put the car antenna plug back in got about 8 and 3 of them were nosiy.

Did your Saturn store do a search of bulletins? They should have come up with:

Subject: Poor Radio Reception or Radio Static/Increased Interference with Rear Window Defogger On or Some Rear Window Defogger Grids May Be Inoperative (Diagnose and Repair Rear Window Defogger Heating Grid) #03-08-44-005G - (03/09/2007)

Condition
Some customers may comment that the radio has poor reception or radio static/increased interference when the rear window defogger is turned on. Also, some rear window defogger grids may be inoperative.

Cause
This condition may be due to microscopic cracks in the electrically heated grids of the rear window defogger. These cracks may cause electrical interference when the rear defogger is on and this could affect radio reception.

Not to mention a couple of others that I eliminated because they did not fit your description of the problem getting worse with the rear defog on.

...
A lousy day in paradise is still a day in paradise.

I have a 2007 Aura XE. Is there a easy way to add a outside car antenna. The one in the rear window is lousy. We hooked a outside antenna to the radio and pull in 30+ AM stations. Only get 8 stations with window antenna, and 3 of them are weak and nosiy. Even worse with the rear defog on.

Why don't you plug in a portable radio into the Auxiliary port?

Thanks to a great Service Dept at Saturn Wichita East (KS). They got my radio problem fixed.

It was a bad cable behind to the dash board.

I've had Saturns since 1994. And they have always had superb service from this Saturn Dealer.
