Default Ignition Coils

My Chiltons says that when changing the ignition coils, new holes should be tapped into the transmition housing to bolt them on, my question is...
Is it really necessarry?

No, I've never heard of that. The only reason I could think of why, might be to clean up the threads so as to not strip it, or to ensure a good connection. I think they ground through the tranmission housing.

No. Thats sounds pretty dumb. Another reason not to trust the Chiltons or Haynes manuals. Just reuse the same bolts in the same holes. Just dont overtighten so you dont crack the ignition coil.

the reason for all the work on the bell mount is -------
the bolts come with a locktite type coating
this is necessary to prevent the bolts from making a ground connection
if the bolts get grounded
the ignition spark often jumps down the coil tower to the bolt head
instead of going to the spark plug where it should
this is A real crazy thing that Saturn had to overcome early on
it should not happen ,but it really does,as soon as the engine gets warm
I saw it on our S L 2 ,soo I put A blob of rtv blue on the bolt heads
after the old bolts were re-installed ,the bolt heads were insulated
so the jump stopped, the spark went to the plugs instead
no more skipping
