2008 Astra XR
Default Totaled?

Last Friday a Passat nearly took me head-on, but I swerved enough he got me good on the left side sending me into the guardrail on the right.

Just found out it'll be over a week before I hear a decision from the adjuster, should I start looking for a replacement?

2008 with 30,000 miles, fully loaded. I bought it a year ago for 12,000 and I don't want to try and find that good of a deal again. Nor can I afford any comparable hatchback manuals.

Anyone have experience getting the salvage title and getting extensive repairs done?

I want my Astra back!

From the looks of it I would say it is a goner. Glad to hear you are okay though - the car did its job.

I'm not sure I would want it to be fixed if I were in your shoes. That is a hell of a lot of damage to the front subframe - plus given the rarity of the car, getting parts for it is going to be difficult if not impossible.

Not worth the headache of repairing for a salvaged title. Let them buy it and then go out and buy a new one without history of an accident. Saves time and money

Yeah, the car definitely did its job, both in being able to avoid the worst and get me through it without any injuries.

Shucks, I guess it's time to move on then. What a shame.

When it comes to them totalling it, Don't be shy to being firm with 'negotiating' the price with the insurance company. You have to accept the offer they give you, you can say no.

I used to work for an aftermarket auto parts supplier in the Detroit area and I can tell you that the parts we did carry were real expensive or hard to find. Let them write it off. But look on KBB.com and see what your car was worth before you agree on an amount.

Can I please prod you a little further on this? I'm a newbie at dealing with insurance companies after accidents and didn't know I had any say in the matter. As Eric mentioned I've looked up the KBB value, how hard and fast can I, for instance, hold to a refusal to accept anything less? Is this a regular negotiation between two equal parties, or do they hold majority say?

I unfortunately have experience in this area. Three of my cars were stolen. You can search the country for comparable cars for sale. They try to limit you to geographic area, but if the car isn't in that area you can go further.

You are supposed to use asking prices f comparable cars. Asking Prices - they cannot come back and say "that person would have taken x% less".

Go ahead, look on autotrader, cars.com, the local paper, msn cars, Edmunds, KBB, etc. Find cars similar to yours.

If you find one with higher mileage, add say $.15 a mile to the asking price to get where you are. If you just put new tires on they will say that is maintenance, I say BS. Add the cost of the tires to make the cars equal.

Don't forget to add sales tax t their offer.

In theory you should be able to write a check for your deductible, walk into a dealership with the deductible check, and walk out with the identical car.

good luck.

Wow Tom, thanks for this. I didn't realize how unprepared I was going to be. At least I'll be looking for a comparable car to replace it anyway, so I'll already be doing the research. Crazy you've had so many cars stolen, hope your Astra stays safe.

Hello, your car can only be totaled out if repair exceeds %70 of fair market value. If it is totaled you can buy it back for what the salvage value is Don't worry about parts for your car. They are here. Your car has a rust through warranty that Gm has to honor. These parts are around or Gm can get them here from Germany overnight. They fly parts every night. You car isn't rare. Just the fact that it say Saturn on it is. "It is the best small car GM ever built Worldwide" That quote is from European press. That model Astra is on every continent. GM sold a boat load of them. Parts are no problem. So keep your chin up. You have a good car that deserves a second chance. Rick

this is nuts. the warranty doesn't cover parts that were not installed by the factory. why put together a relatively inexpensive economy car that will probably never be the same, be inconvenienced for months while it is repaired, etc. instead of just taking the money and move on?

you should buy it back for salvage value and put it together. good luck!
