2008 VUE 3.6L
Default Re: Steering Wheel Noise 2008 and up Vue

Hi , My daughter is negotiating with a dealer for a 2008 Vue XR. One point of contention is a sound inside the cab coming from thye steering column. It sound s like plastic rubbing against plastic inside the shroud. Should this be a major concern derailing the purchase?

The steering noise is the least of the Vue's problems. Check out the forum for transmission problems. These transmissions have "wave plate" problems. Do a search for "wave plate." If I were you I'd move on to a different vehicle.

I found this notice 09-08
Vue -- Squeak while turning steering wheel
Modify boot, install new I-shaft bolts
Don't lubricate or replace I-shaft

Hi!, i have this rubbing noise also, did you just lube the boot or modified it? Can you tell me how did you do it or there is a how-to somewhere?
Thanks!

Agree with Swimmer….move onto a more reliable vehicle. Love the way ours drives, but it’s been a constant source of trouble. Items replaced include:

Alternator
Battery Cables
Water Pump
Brake Booster
Master Cylinder
Steering column noise
Front suspension noise
There’s more but I can’t think of it off the top of my head

And of course the famous Transmission Wave Plate issue hanging over us. My 1996 SaturnSL2 with 150,000+ miles has been way more reliable then the VUE. The only thing I have replaced (besides normal wear and tear items) in the 20+ years of ownership is the alternator and a heater core. I would not recommend a used VUE to anyone, well except maybe for ISIS

Maybe I've been lucky. Since new, I've bought 1 battery and changed filters and oil. On third set of tires. Did flush the trans, brake and radiator fluids once each, and changed wipers. Plugs at 105k. No unexpected maintenance other than replacement of the front right sway bar (cheap & easy DYI repair).

Currently at 125k, and there's still about 30% brake pad left on the original front brakes. Most reliable car I've every purchased.

My '09 Vue Redline has been very reliable as well. Purchased new in Dec of '08, in fact, I just put a new battery in it I picked up from Walmart...same batt at Autozone was $50 more
My Vue has less than 40K miles and sits in the garage most of the time but has just about all its original parts and no major glitches.

2008 VUE 3.6L
Default Re: Steering Wheel Noise 2008 and up Vue

Our VUE has come down with all of the usual problems. We had the 3-5-R wave plate failure. We've got a steering column that makes these chipmunk noises, and our HVAC controller went out (blows only cold air, can't change which vents air is delivered through--fortunately this was an easy and cheap self-service fix).

GM did right by us with the wave plate thing, though it took years. They cut us a break on repair since it happened just out of warranty, and then comped the rest once the scope of the problem became more apparent.

We also had to replace the heater core.

All in all not quite enough to dislike the VUE, because it is a very nice car when it behaves itself, however it's tempered my ability to recommend it to others.
