Default Automatic Hazard Lights

So I discovered a funny little thing with my Astra today. I'm slowly losing coolant somewhere so about once a week I need to put about a cup of it in the reservoir so the low coolant display doesn't keep coming on. It snowed last night so first I went out and cleared off all the snow and I popped the hood but didn't open it. Then I locked the car while I went to get my jug and funnel. I came back and when I opened the hood with the car locked my hazard lights started flashing. They kept going until I unlocked the car. When I locked the car with the hood fully opened they didn't come back on.

Is your horn broken? If the doors were locked via the fob, then your alarm was active and when you opened the hood, it set off the alarm. If you look under the hood, back by the driver's side hinge (if I remember correctly), you'll see the sensor. I only tripped my alarm one time, and it was via the hood, I can't remember if the lights flash, but I know the horn blows.

You nailed it. Apparently my horn doesn't work. Tested it today and nothing.

Anyone know if this is a known issue? Is the problem the horn itself or in the column?

There is a recall or covered service repair on the horn itself on these cars. I would check with your Saturn authorized service provider. The free repair period is not indefinate though. I think it only goes for a couple more years and then we are on our own with that specific type of problem.

Here's a thread in the Tech section that discusses the recall and how to fix it. According to what I've found, it's an intermittent problem with the horn when the lights are on. Some also report a problem with the buttons on the steering wheel. I'm going to check mine tonight to see if there's any problems.

They are suppose to do the repairs as long as the vehicle is either under 10 of original date put into service or 120,000 miles. Which ever comes first.

Thank you guys for all your help. I have an appointment Monday to get it fixed for free. The guy at the dealership was able to bring up that bulletin while I was on the phone with him.
Now I feel a bit foolish about my original post. Thanks again!

No more foolish than I was when I went out to check my oil at around 11pm without my keys. I almost jumped out of my socks when the horn started honking. After getting over the 'what the @#$^?" moment, I ran back to the house to find my keys. I'm sure my neighbors loved it. I had unlatched the hood earlier in the evening so I would remember to check the oil, never expected there to be a sensor under there.

Went to the dealer yesterday. After an hour and a half they told me that they did everything the bulletin would allow them to do for free but the horn still didn't work and wanted to charge me an hour of labor to look into it more. I told them no and drove home. I'll look at the horn when things warm up around here.

Hopefully the horn problem is a malfunctioning horn unit itself and not that well known fault in the steering module...

I am more concerned with your coolant loss if your car has an auto box. Check there is no oil contamination in the coolant reservoir. If there is, get the transmission fluid checked for water contamination as quickly as possible.

There is a well documented problem with all kinds of cars (not just Opel) where the transmission fluid is cooled within a separate circuit in the water radiator. The seals between the two systems can leak which leads to oil in the water and water in the trans. This eventually leads to total transmission failure

I had the factory horn go bad on me as well. Just dead. Thought it might be the recall item as well but did some testing and all seemed well. Ended up just getting some new dual horns. made it a bit louder with a nicer tone.

Replaced with these:

The bracket that is on there from the factory splits off into two pieces so you can mount a dual setup with some coaxing.
