Changed the oil on the 1994 SL2 I gave my sons mom last year. Drained exactly four quarts out.

We originally bought this car and rebuilt this engine for my grandfather a little over seven years ago. He drove it until he died in 2006. My brother owned it until 2008 and I had it until the fall of last year when I bought my Aura.

The rebuilt engine has about 80,000 miles on it and it doesnt burn or leak a drop of oil.

That usually helps for vibrations at idle. Vibration at 55-60 is usually due to worn or unbalanced tires.

When I bought the car a couple of months ago the previous owner had a brand new set of tires installed. Assuming of course the tire place balanced them properly. Not knowing for sure I had them rebalanced again. No difference. It almost seems like this car needs that Saturn recommended "powertrain damper kit" I've seen mentioned here. Part of some service bulletin. But I've never seen any members come back and reply about whether it fixed their problem or not. It's always, "parts have been ordered", or "appointment made", then nothing...

I swear the problems never end... I want to smack the previous owner of this car upside the head.

Now I get to replace the radiator because it's got a crack in it. Le sigh.

So today I put coolant in every 20 miles on my way back from a meeting an hour away.

And also a small exhaust issue. (Thank god that something's a small issue).

Still haven't found the right lock button at the pick and pull. I'll go back in after I tackle the radiator.

New radiator in
Code P0410 - taken care of.

No lock button yet, but all else is good. Feeling major relief.

Added a new bracket to hold the front fender / bumper together.

This is why I wanted a plastic car, so stuff like this didn't show!
Before (can you say, "quality of metal?")

After (with a good coat of Rustoleum)

That ground for the battery does very strange things to the driver's side of the frame the bracket on the passenger side was only a little rusty.

I plan to install another ground. - It will run from the big ground bolt at the Under Hood fuse block to the frame on the other side.
two or three lengths of Monster Cable (in parallel) should provide a path of least resistance to the passenger side. (or not??)

Glad someone dug this up..

anyway, over the last two days, I put in some new door speakers. I also changed my oil today.

Now I'm debating on going back to Best Buy to get two more speakers so I can do the rears.

How much do those go for new? I can find tons of rust free ones here. Might be worth me picking up a few if it can save some people some $$$. And make me a few bucks in the process.

$13.34 each + about $4 for the 4 T-bolts that screw into them.
There's so much stuff you could salvage from your dusty (but otherwise perfect) junk yard Saturns!
You'd have to drill out the rivets.
I used shelf screws to attach the new brackets.
Very hard to reach in there, so I used JB Quick to attach bailing wire to the nuts. Worked very well!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program of rust maintenance in the Rust Belt:

Replaced Brake Pads and Rotors. The squeelers hadn't yet squeeled, so it means the brake pads are still good....right?
What? Me worry?

Hey! Look at me ! I got Rust Jacking! - Just like them Truckers on the Midnight Trucking Radio Network

Q: Does anyone remember when brake pads were "Glued and Riveted?"

Took off the egr valve and cleaned it out. The pintle was sticky and it had some carbon buildup. I also cleaned the TB because the butterfly was starting to stick a little. I think I need to replace the PCV valve again as well.

I replaced the lower transmission mount yesterday. It wasn't too difficult except for the defective Pep Boys mount. I had to change it again after the stud broke when torquing the nut. No, I didn't stress it during install, it went straight in.

Oh- I also put in the proper OEM NGK spark plugs. We'll see how those work out!

Replaced the Intake Manifold Gasket!!

The idle went up to 1300 - 2500 RPM's instead of the 750 it was suppose to be! :o When I rev'd the engine way up, it was quite loud; now it's much more controlled and quieter.

A rewarding project.

See the big wrinkle in my Tech Thread........

I have done nothing with my Saturn today except drive it. However, I couldn't have thought of a better thread to post this in.

I feel lucky, with reading these threads, about my Saturn. I've replaced the clutch twice. Once because of a bad previous owner (new clutch needed at 100K) and a second time because of either a botched job from the first replacement, or a botched job when AAMCO replaced my output shaft seal. They say that they couldn't have caused my clutch to break apart, but it happened when I was driving home from the shop after the seal job.

I replaced the transmission twice, once for my own fault in snow with really bad tires. I was spinning my wheels a lot, so I blame the tires. The second time was a bad bearing on the inside.

Those are the big things.

Everything else was just brake pads and rotors, the vacuum hose from the secondary air pump, spark plugs, and wires. General maintenance stuff. Oh yeah, I replaced the alternator and a starter.

Nearly 200K, and I still use the original CPS and sensors. The fact that I'm almost at 100K on my own with this clutch, just shows me that the previous owner sucked at driving. Also, my last car nearly had 200K with the original clutch when the car was rear ended at a stop light. I bought the car with 30k. Some drivers just think they can drive a stick.
