Default What is under the plastic roof rails?

So, I was about to swap my chrome roof rails and my wife's plain, plastic roof rails this weekend when I noticed what looks to be a sealant of some kind underneath. Question is, what is the substance and how easily does it come off? Is it something affixing both the rail and the roof together?

Anyone take their roof rails off and if so, did you have to add new compound under the units?

Anyone with any opinions on this? I'd hate to start tearing it all down only to find some really strong epoxy under there.

I inquired about adding roof rails when i bought my vue. The dealership advised me not to do it. They seemed to think it would create a leak problem.

I recently pulled all of the Torx bolts out of my 2003 Vue's roof rails to see if I could peek under them. I too noticed the adhesive underneath them and decided to wait for another day.

I am currently looking for a way to affix my Thule roof rack system to my Vue. No luck yet though.

It's just RTV sealant. I had mine off on my 2005. The only thing that could leak is the bolt holes on the rail. Make sure you seal them well with RTV.

Don't use RTV on body panels the acid will eat the paint and metal, did you ever wonder why it smelled like vinegar, Ive seen it numerous times when people rtv the nameplates and moldings back on there vehicles.
use anything but rtv
