Default 1996 HELP! SL1 Transmission questions-still no reverse

My son has a 96 SL1 with 185000 miles on it. Other then a pretty bad oil 'habit' it has been running fine. It had the 'reverse slam' problem when we bought it and we did the cleaning procedure and it was better for a while, then it started slamming again.
Long story short, reverse quit altogether about a week ago. I bought a 'rebuilt' eBay valve body, installed it, removed the end of the transmission and re-torqued the output shaft (it took at least 3 full turns before I could torque it), and checked the input shaft. The nut seemed tight, but it was impossible to hold it from turning with anything, to really check the torque.
I put it all back together, warmed it up, topped the fluid (recently changed) but still no reverse. I do hear a click or buzz from the vicinity of the valve body, but it will not engage.
Anyone have any ideas??

By the way, thanks to all those that do such a great job with the tech articles - great job!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Disclaimer: I don't have an auto tranny. But just from reading about them, I thought you should use a NEW shaft nut.
And also I thought you could swap parts in the valve body to find the bad one. Sorry that's all I can offer.
