2004 ION-1 Sedan
Question Will a 2005 Ion engine fit in a 2004 Ion?

Im looking at buying a 2005 but it was manufactured in 10/2005 with 125,000 miles on the engine. I was gona swap in my 2004 with 325,000

Would this engine be a direct replacment for my 2004 Ion?

That build date of 10/2005 would make it a 2006, but 2005 & 2006 engines are identical so it doesn't change your situation. The long block should be a direct swap. You will just need to reuse the intake manifold, fuel rail & injectors, and throttlebody from your 2004 because 2005-2006 engines are throttle-by-wire engines.

What about the five speed automatic transmission ? Won't an adapter or something be needed for the engine to fit unless it's a manual ?

No, the engines are the same. The transmissions all mount to the engines the same way. That's why it's so easy to do transmission swaps on CVT models.

Correct, but like I said before, a 2005-2006 engine can be installed if you reuse the 2004 Intake manifold, throttlebody, fuel rail, and injectors.

Dizzy Re: Will a 2005 Ion engine fit in a 2004 Ion?

1) about how many man hours do you think it would take a weekend warrior to swap the motor, transmission and the air intake / throttlebody over and install everthing.

2) Would I need to evac my A/c unit?

3) Is it easier ro bring motor/trannsmission out through the bottom?

4) would I have to have the dealership re-flash any computers with the new engine instalment?

5) what would that red 2005 Saturn Ion be worth at Copart auto auctions? I think no more than $400. Its 3 hours away where I live so I would plan on driving it home not towing . What do you guys think that Saturn is worth for purchase as is?

Heart Re: Will a 2005 Ion engine fit in a 2004 Ion?

Drove the car home after a 2.5 hr trip and it runs AMAZING. If you look at the 10th digit the car is actually a 2004 model Ion so someone swapped the door out at some point in time
I cant wait to swap this drive train out and not have ro check my oil level frequently due to my rear main seal leak.

Car fax report confirms this is a low milage car with only 129,000 miles. Whoever ownes hardly drove it.

Excellent, thanks Ruley. I thought there might be potential connection problems.

Great you're going for the save instead of scrapping it. So much waste out there.

My 05 still runs and looks like a late model.
