The big wire is the main ground and that taped up wire needs to be properly spliced by soldering and insulating with heat shrink tape.

Could the taped and spliced wire in that photo be a potential cause for a short?

No, that won't cause a short. Take the tape off so we can see what is there, but it is not likely to be the cause of the smoking or no-crank.

Okay, ill see about fixing that wire. In the meantime i do need to figure out why its smoking and not starting.

When the car was at the mechanics a couple weeks ago for the coil, the mechanic mentioned a "driver fault" that they kept clearing and wouldn't go away. I assume he meant a code. Too late now to call and verify but i can ask him again. I thought about this and looked up anything related to a driver fault. Found stuff mentioning the PCM and a "quad driver fault" and the service wrench light has come on after the car stalls.

Sorry for the contstand double posting but i feel this is too important to not mention.

I just noticed an audible "clicking" coming from the UHJB when turning the key to RUN. You can even feel the clicking coming from box. Loosened the cover and it doesnt appear to have anything going on. But ill check those fuses.

The two white wires next to engine ground look factory made since the nut hasn't been loosened since factory assembly. The large black cable is engine ground going to a chassis stud. This stud may be the same shared connection to the battery negative cable. For the two white wires, you should probably trace both wires as far as you can and/or cut the damaged ones and either solder the bare ends together and use shrink tubing or use any extra wire caps, butt connectors or wire nuts then seal with silicone caulking for a weather proof seal.

'Driver' fault is an electronic term describing a power transistor switching 12v power to; a small relay like the evap solenoid, a small light bulb, etc. Driver means an electronic switch sending power to a fuel pump relay, powering the relay to close a set of electrical contacts that sends 12v to power the fuel pump. The driver is part of the pcm circuit and only powers low current solenoids or indicator lamps. There are several drivers or electronic switches the pcm commands to control relays, indicators and other low current devices.
