1997 SW2
Heart I'm finally a Saturn owner!

After admiring the second generation S series for years, I finally bought one. I'm happy to say that I own a 1997 SW2 in dark green metallic It is a local car (one town, three owners) with a pile of receipts.

I look forward to learning more about her on this forum

97 is the best year

Change your ECTS and keep the oil full, and many happy miles!

What?!? YOU'RE Roger Penske?!? Oh, I see, you didn't buy the whole company...

Enjoy the car. Saturns are fun to drive and pretty easy to maintain. So far (knock on polymer), I've never had one leave me stranded anywhere (this is my 3rd).

No, it's the engine coolant temp sensor. (You can tell noobs on this forum )
The original ones for many years (including your 97) are made of resin and ALWAYS fail, causing poor running, wasting gas, bogus temperature readings.
First thing I did when I joined this forum last year was change the stupid ECTS and it was cracked. Easy 10 minute job, and cheap, the new ones are brass. You can get one at an auto parts store or the dealer.

The temp gauge should be almost to the "half" mark when you are cruising. A bad ECTS will give a low reading, among other ills.

The S series is the best and will run for eons if you take care of it.

Keep the oil full and clean!
Avoid spinning the wheels
Keep battery cables clean
Keep throttle valve clean- notoriously prone to getting gunked up
Keep coolant clean and full
Keep an eye on the radiator, prone to cracking down the left side of the plastic tank, esp. after the 10 year mark
Keep PCV and EGR clean
Replace spark plugs and wires about every 2 years

Working on these cars is relatively simple.
