Default So, I'll be looking at a Saturn tomorrow...

1998 SL, manual, 200k hwy miles.

Anything in particular other than the obvious that I need to look for?

I'll look for oil leaks, fluid leaks, clutch response...

The main purpose is to get a daily driver that's reliable and good on gas.

I currently drive a 2006 Nissan 350z track model...yes, it's fun, but not on the wallet

Any suggestions?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

...You might also have the timing chain checked. And electrical components. Since it's already at 200k miles, the casting flaw has either probably manifested itself (and hopefully been fixed -- check your oil for any antifreeze and your antifreeze for any oil after driving it for a while [not sure how long]) or your particular car escaped the issue.

Well, can't check the timing chain...We are meeting in the city...I'll be taking the train...

I'll definitely check the oil!

It's going for $600...is it even worth any potential issues?

Ask them why they're selling it for so cheap. Also at 200k+ miles, how much longer it'll last will depend on how it was maintained and used.

I'll definitely ask...

There's another one for $1k...98 SL1, 130k mi, new clutch, new tires...

Wouldn't that one make more sense?

$400 more for 70k fewer miles makes a lot of sense.
The single cam engines (SL/SL1) had some issues with the intake manifold gasket failing, but it's an easy and inexpensive fix.

I opted not to go for that one...

Gonna go see another one for $1k...98 SL1, 130k mi, new clutch, timing chain replaced at 130k, and new tires...

I think that ones a better deal, eh?

I guess... The timing chain is supposed to (out)last the life of the motor if you take care of it, so I'd like to know why this chain was replaced..

Then again you are getting new tires and clutch like last time, but you have a fresh chain.. Eh I'd still go for it.

Oh and SaturnRaycer, the intake manifold problem was on the 3rd gen SOHC. not like it matters much, since this generation of SOHC (IIRC it was all SOHCs made from 1994-1999) had some head problems (slight crack and oil gets into the coolant), however none of the DOHCs have experienced this..
