Default How long do OEM tires last and alignment

Hey dudes,
Almost 60K on the 2008 XE and I still have OEM tires and the guy at Discount Tire says I can still run em. Except for the fronts have uneven tire wear, but still usable. I noticed this car needs an alignment every 3 months (it could be my wife smacking potholes while on her phone). Good thing I have life time alignment at the Firestone down the street.

How long did your oem set last you?

Just 2 days ago I had the original tires (Goodyear Eagle LS2) rotated on my '07 XR. They have 54,000 miles on them and 6/32 of tread. The service guy at my GM dealer said he sees it all the time and has seen cars with those tires last up to 80,000 miles. I admit they ride like a buckboard and I can almost feel when I run over a dime, but I'll take that for the mileage. Cruising on the Interstate, they ride very well. Hitting the many, many ill-placed manhole covers and potholes in this town rattles my teeth.

I didn't need an alignment until 45,000 miles and that was after 2 round-trips from NC to Dallas, TX and 8 round-trips from NC to DC. (Where I averaged 72mph and got 31mpg, BTW... love it.

When it does come time to replace the tires, I'll try to go with a little softer tire for a better local ride, although I'm retired and on a very fixed income. I'll appreciate any recommendations or suggestions from Aura drivers out there. Thanks in advance.

I have the LS2 as well and need new tires soon due to outer shoulder wear of the front tires with ~50k miles, much less on the rears. Wondering too what would be better tire to use.

I have been looking at

~Yokohama YK520 and YK580
~Cooper CS4
~Michelin Hydroedge

explain to me how you are getting 28 mpg out of the 07 xr. if i pulled 2 spark plugs, i would bet my xr would still not get 28. on the highway it might see 22 at best.

I get at least 29 mpg in my 08 XR doing 75-80 mph. Got 30 mpg once from Ojai to LA, door-to-door per the DIC.
I replaced the oem LS2 tires a few months ago at about 65K miles as they developed belt separation although still having wear left. They were also showing cracking on the sidewalls. In sunny climes rubber deteriorates faster. I hated those tires. I have these now and they are incredible:

I have a correction , after the water pump was replaced the mpg was 28 for one tank. Prior and since the mpg is 26 on the open highway with average speed of 48 mph per DIC with 87 oct. The temperature the Central Valley and the Delta of Northern CA regularly. I agree that the faster the speed, the better the mpg. Also, no difference whether the AC is on/off.

Unfortunately, the mpg was 25 on the last tank. I found the LR tire low because of a nail . The pressure was not low enough for the warning. Wear on the RF was increased as a result. I am sure that new tires will help emmencely (not to mention the proper air pressure).

I saw re970 on a 350z recently and really like the look . At $3 more per tire than the yk580, I would consider the re970. Although the wear factor is 180 less and 5k miles less on warranty. Only thing, I can not find any reviews for the yk580. I do not like how loose the LS2 is on acceleration. How does the re970 handle when accelerating?

I am concerned about a whine from 45 mph to 55 mph, then again around 70 mph. I am guessing the wheel bearings need to be replaced.

Regards,

Driving habits and tire pressure contribute to fuel consumption. Tonight's trip resulted in ~30 mpg driving 55 mph for 83% of the route. Driving 55 mph is not normal. Construction along the route encourage this experiment. The tire pressure was 36 psi all around (nail included). The outside temperature was 71 degF in town and dropped to 61 degF across the delta. The mph reached 31.5 before the outside temperature dropped below 70 degF.

Is it possible to reprogram the computer for optimal performance at any speed?

had to laugh. with 73318 miles ive got the 07 xr v6 at dealership getting new head gaskets, water pump and passenger sensing system. i asked while i was there if they thought i should get new tires. they measure and looked and even with that many miles they said tires are fine. very long lasting tires if you keep air in them.

07 Saturn XR - 105,000 mls

Recently changed my original Eagle LS2's at 100,000 mls due to cracking on the sidewalls, other than the usual complaints of hard ride, noisy, poor traction, they have served well. In Winter I use Hankook winter tires up here in Ontario for safety reasons, I use winter tires because the Eagle LS 2 had no traction in the snow.

I recenty changed the LS 2's (Tire Rack Score (5.5) for General GMAX AS-03 tires which scored an 8.3 on Tire Rack (Pretty High). Uphere in Canada we pay a premium price for tires because the Tire manufacturers control the market price and the prices are pretty much the same whichever dealer you go to (No competition).

I looked at Michelin Hydroedge (Tire Rack Score = 8.0) ($1300 fitted and balanced) and Goodyear Comfort Tred (Tire Rack Score = 8.4) ($1200 fitted and balanced).
I got the Generals for $750 fitted and balanced due to a manufacturer promotion.

So far, I am impressed with the Generals, much quieter (Especially on concrete pavement), much better roadholding and immensely improved traction.

Fuel consumption appears to be relatively unchanged at 28-32 mpg highway and 18-22 city. These cars seem to be unaffected by use of air conditioning and speed for fuel consumption once cruising. However indiscriminate use of the throttle (Sudden acceleration, up and down through the gears etc) affect the MPG a lot.

Grungi,
The RE 970 have excellent traction. The LS2s broke loose even under mild acceleration - very annoying. No squealing tires in the parking garage either. I really like the rim protection feature, which no other tire for this car had, when I was looking. All-around great tire in the wet or dry.

The Hankook Optima's originally mounted on the car should have easily made it over 80,000 miles. I had 84,000 on mine before I replaced them with a "Much Higher Quality Hankook", the Ventus V4 ES H105 and that was a huge mistake. I read about 25 reviews on those tires before I bought them and did so because of the reviews and the across the board higher ratings. After 53,000 miles, they are shot, have leaked since day 1, yes all 4 tires in spite of being remounted 3 times each and in general they are a POS. My wife now drives this vehicle and trust me, any man who buy's those Ventus' for their wives car deserves every whine he hears and I've heard them every day for 2 years. I'm yanking them and replacing them with the original Optima's that were OEM specs. Those were the same times on her Ion as well as my Aura when it was new and hands down, the best tires I've ever owned PERIOD! So back to the Optima's and please God, a happier wife.

Oh, the alignment.... If you replace the tires, I have it aligned but I also watch the wear pattern's on each tire. Make sure you rotate them religiously because you will identify alignment problems if you do and watch the tire wear. I'll also have the alignment checked if I hit something significant like a huge pothole or when I fell asleep and hit a center curb in DC. Believe it or not, that curb didn't knock it out of line but it trashed the wheel bearing which resulted in an alignment anyway. The bottom line, tires deserve as much attention as oil, washer fluid, brake fluid etc. etc. PAY ATTENTION to them and they will serve you well and save you a lot of money and potentially your life. Lastly, I have a mechanic that I've had for years take care of my vehicles (I do change the oil and filter on my Aura and Silverado plus I lube the truck too,) but he has the record of every change I've done along with the receipts so there is never a question with voided warranties or improper maintenance. Lastly, I've used synthetic oil since day one with Bosch filters. Either Mobile 1 or Valvoline 5W-30. My mechanic says that I can use either of those or Castrol, but he swears by Bosch filters. Three-four times the price but I've never had anything but exceptional protection from them.

Lastly, G.M. what in the world were they thinking...... keeping Buick and dumping Saturn? Can you say stupidity?

When I bought my Aura with 25K miles they had the OEM tired. I replaced them with some Mastercrafts around 60K. I hated those and they were completely bald by 90K even though they were pro-rated for 45K miles. It was like I had racing slicks.

In November I had the Cooper CS4's put on at 100K and I'm now at 109. So far they're not bad, I haven't had the tread measured but I'm getting my Aura towed to the shop tomorrow and having them check my alignment and rotate my tires since they'll be poking around doing other stuff all day. But the Coopers aren't very loud, a decently smooth ride and they've maintained my gas mileage.

My 2007 XR had 73,000+ miles on it, when I noticed the inner edges on all 4 tires were worn; and I'm quite pleased. (Goodyear Eagle LS-2)

Proper camber angle specs on this car run to the negative, so after 73,000 miles, more wear will be evident on the inner edges.
* I rotated AND balanced the tires every 5,000-8,000 miles
* I checked & adjusted the air pressure monthly .... they seemed to lose a couple of pounds of pressure, through normal permeation.
* I ran the tire pressure higher than factory recommendation (intentionally)
* I've hit a few potholes.
* I've never hit a curb.
* I live in sunny Southern California, so traction was mostly good.
* Comfortable & Quiet ride
* Decent response & predictability on these LS-2's
* Roadtrips at 65mph, yield appx 31mpg.
* Roadrips at 80+mph , yield 22-24mpg (HUGE difference!)

Still love the car, and would love to buy a pass side tail light lens, if anyone has one for sale.

Thanks.

"I noticed this car needs an alignment every 3 months"

This is wrong. Something is moving. There are some rubber bushings down there wearing out and influencing the alignment badly. I had them all replaced under warranty right before 60k miles. These rubber parts change the alignment and if you have them worn badly - the tires will wear out unevenly.

Mine went out because our FWYs are made with concrete and they are quite bad. That's not good for the car - especially when you commute 30+ miles everyday. This killed my shocks - they failed right after the warranty ended. It makes good sense to put in new shocks and bushings after 60k miles +.

Also - don't assume your alignment is correct after being "adjusted".
Shops do such a poor quality work ....
