Default Testing column switch

This is for any of you Saturn techs. Is there any way to run a continuity test on the switch in the column of an Ion? This is a known problem according to the techs, with cold weather starting problems. A friend of mine just got hers replaced to the tune of $267.00. The part # is 10392423. I think part of the problem may be that it's made in Mexico. The service manager told me the way they test them at the dealership is to put them in a freezer for a couple of hours and then re-install them and try to start the car. If it doesn't start, they consider it bad and replace it. Seems like a half-assed way to do something to me.

Dude, I just want to know if there's any way to run a continuity test on the switch. I'm guessing from your reply that you don't know either.

disassemble it, degrease it, and regrease it, or to trouble shoot it, use the previously mentioned method. No, there is no procedure for a continuity test.

Okay, thank you. That's what I needed to know. I do appreciate it. I guess it's just one of those things that's either good or faulty. Hopefully the new one will last her longer. They gave her a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty. Which ever occurs first. I'm betting on the 12 months.

in the mean time you can degrease and regrease the old one and keep it for a standby, they seem to stay good once degreased.

Is it possible that the grease they're using in them just gets hard and won't let it make contact while it's cold? In this day and age, that wouldn't be that much of a surprise, would it?

Very easy to take apart. I did that and sure enough, the grease was kind of hard. I cleaned it out, put some new di-electric grease in it and will keep it as a back up for her. If it happens again next winter, I'll be ready. LOL Now, if only someone would explain to me how to re-set the security system that they told her had to be done via the computer, I'd really be ready.
