Default 144.500 on 97 sc2

Redundent question here...
At 144.500 miles, is a timing belt replacment and valve adj. standard as preventive maint? I am guessing it is as with all 4cyl....

Also, is the chatter at the front of the motor at idle a saturn trait? When at higher rpms it smooths out to a normal 4 cyl. sound. Was wondering have heard stories that it is a little louder motor then some of the other 4cyl. out there......

Thanks !

First off, there's no timing belt, it's a timing chain. If you keep your oil clean and topped off at each fill up, your timing chain will probably last a lot longer.

The chatter is probably the engine mounts, which seem to die every 60k. The engine is usually really quiet with new mounts.

Ah yes.. Chain.
Regarding the chatter, don't think it's the mounts. Has an internal sound to it. Don't notice much flex at motor when reved under the hood.At least it has no noticable movement. I guess it could be the timing chain. Not sure. However it is coming from the pulley / front end of the motor. And it smooths out under acceleration. I only ask as my Dad (ha ha) was very concerend. Yes I know I am 40 years old.....LOL

BTY, the idiots at the oil change place, slipped me a flush instead of an tranny fluid and filter change. I am quite pissed!! I mean, how else could you state what you want done? "change the tranny fluid and flitler" !!!

Well, hope too many little pieces didn't get dislodged........

Thanks for the help!

No belt. But that timing chain should be replaced. I do that every 100K miles. But others have different opinions. And theres no need for valve adjustment.

Could be anything. Saturns are a little noisy. If the noise corresponds with RPM then it could be the lifters making noise. As long as the noise smooths out with RPM I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the trans. Don't go to one of those oil change places. They never do it right. You can do it yourself. Just drain the fluid and replace the filter on the front. Just as easy as doing the oil.
