Cleaning it does not improve performance of anything except the perhaps the idle. The IAC is the idle air control valve. It allows a controlled amount of air to by pass the throttle plates to maintain a steady idle. If the [assages or the valve get gummed up the idle quality can suffer. Depends on the year and model where the passage is. On multiport injected engines (Saturn S-series) it is in the throttle body bottom just before the throttle plate.

most S-series have this design throttle body

http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/sho...p/photo/15887/

remove intake tubing
spray with sensor safe carb and choke cleaner
work throttle plate by hand
spray some more
start engine

thats basicly it.

inside the bore of the throttle body, trust me you'll see carbon in there, about 1/2 of a inch in front of the throttle body there is a hole/passage with the diameter just smaller then a pencil IIRC, the IAC is in the bottom of that hole, so spray there too.

2006 ION-2 Sedan
Default Re: cleaning iac valve

A few months ago, I had to have the IAC valve replaced. This was in the 2002 SC1. What happened was that, at times, my engine would be idling higher than it should. It was an intermittent problem for a long time, and the dealer could not replicate it. Finally, after a service visit, it finally replicated and I was able to drive it back to the dealer to show them. It did go back to normal several times, but it went back to doing it when I got there.

The first thing they did was try to lower the idle speed by hooking up my car to some little machine (have no idea what it is called) but to no avail. The took my car in and found that the burrs were worn on the IAC valve and they replaced it. Thankfully, it was reported way before the warranty expired. Even though my car was out of warranty by the time the cause was found, they still had to cover it. Yay!!

they were using a special GM/Saturn scantool called the Tech2, with it you can manually control the signal to the IAC

SO guess the IAC is one of the warranty items.

The high-idle surge problem is one of the infamous thread for later S-series here. IAC is the culprit looks like.
