Default Coolant Temp Sensor - Fan or Gauge?

I'm a newbie, I own a 92 SL, SOHC, 1.9 L

I need to replace my coolant temp sensor. I asked the parts guy at Saturn and he asked me if I need one for a Fan or for a gauge. How do I tell which one it is I need?

Thanks for your help.

If you need to replace a temp sensor for any performance problems or a SES light indication, then its the PCM temp sensor that feeds the temp data to the car's computer which controls the fan. The guage sensor is just that--it runs the guage only. The PCM sensor has a two-wire connector, while the guage sensor has a single wire.

Good luck!

just get them both and replace them at the same time. a little preventive maintenance never hurt.

Total cost should be no more than $40.00
