2008 Astra XR
2002 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Default Coolant temp gauge

My car has one.

To display...
1. The radio must be ON (turn the volume all the way down so you can hear)
2. Hit MAIN so you're on the main page.
3. Hold down SETTINGS for about 5-6 seconds, until you hear a beep.
4. Press BC. You'll initially come up with the regular board computer screen. Continue hitting BC to step through the test mode screens (there's about 7 screens).

I don't have the slightest idea what most of the other indications on the other pages are for.
edit... It looks like "display" is the temp displayed on the screen (22C = 71.6F). Looking at the UK site, I guess the sensor temp is temperature without error correction from engine heat.

To get out of test mode, repeat steps 2 and 3 (you must be on the main screen when you hold down SETTINGS, or it won't work).

Found the basic instructions here. They took some tweaking before I got it to work on my car.

I'm just hoping I didn't accidentally change some setting and screwed something up. It didn't look like any of the displays were user-changeable, but still...

They are not. If you fiddle with the throttle, brakes and steering you can see alot of other values too, traction control etc...

Should'nt have to fiddle with 7 screens & myriad of menu options to find out what coolant temp is.

You should be able to glance over @ something next to the gas gauge.

It's called "slipstreaming driver sensor inputs".
Another word for it is "penny pinching".

Call it what you want. I think it suxx.

Gauges should be easy to read and readily available to the driver without having to distract them. Information should be right there, not having to jump thru hoops and take your eyes off the road.

Its bad enough manufacturers have removed voltage & oil pressure gauges & replaced them with idiot lights. To find out basic information such as coolant temp with the instructions L200 has given us is rediculous.

What 's next: a gas guage that can be only read by checking your latest e-mail from On-Star?

If it's penny pinching, then why did they give us "tire pressure monitors" instead?

Given the amount of electronics in this car, coolant temp should be a simple digital read out on the main gauge panel. If it can display what gear the transaxle is in, the coolant temp should be a piece of cake, since the system knows what the temp. is anyway. It would not take up much real estate on the instrument dash panel. Since this is such a driver's car, it is not penny pinching, it's bad engineering/design. Wonder if they were trying to copy BMW's iDrive?

Thanks!! Good find. I'll have to play with this.
A software change is all that would be required for critical parameters to be displayed on the main page (oil pressure, coolant temp, Tire pressure, etc.....) and would save money since no additional hardware would be required (i.e. gauges). Obviously the computer is already processing the data, its just a matter of displaying it.

Tire pressure monitoring system will be a requirement in all new vehicles in the US starting in 2009, so most manufacturers have already put them on their cars and then brag about the "new feature."

As someone already said, the logistics for a temp gauge are already there. (coolant temp switch, wiring harness, computer to diagnose to coolant temp, etc.).

Is GM is so cheap they can't put a $3 guage in?

So far only the 2-line displays have lacked this information. In the 3-line display it is displayed differently, instead of Coolant it says T:

Quite a few cars don't have temp gauges anymore.
