Default aura's front armrest

when i look at the pictures of an aura, the front armrest looks like hard plastic and doesn't look very comfortable..I like to drive with my left arm and rest my right arm on my armrest so this is kinda important for me. does the armrest come forward? is it comfortable?

It slides forward. It is made of plastic, but the fact that it doesn't have padding hasn't seemed to bother me the last three months. It's as comfortable as my last car, which did have a sliding padded armrest. Test drive it and see if it works for you.

I've driven my friend's AURA XR many times and find the armrest to be way too hard and it slides way too easily with no "locking" positions. It and the cheap plastic door panel inserts are the two most poorly executed details in the car's interior.

The armrest in the middle is in some ways even worse than what is on the door. It is just as uncomfortable, being simply hard plastic. While the one on the door has annoying, fake "stitching" that bothers your elbow (who ever heard of stitching plastic? ), the one in the middle moves forward and back as you drive. I think it is quite unsafe. It has no detents to hold it in place so every time you move your arm (if you have a decent amount of weight on it) the armrest moves as well. Try hitting the brakes hard and it moves your arm forward. Not exactly what you want in an emergency situation.

If you want to see how nice Saturn can make an interior, look at the new Outlook. On second thought, don't. It will frustrate you even more when you realize just how much the accountants butchered these parts. We are all hoping for fixes in '08.

I believe that the armrests are the most likely parts of the car to be upgraded for 2008. They've received more crticism than the rest of the car put together. I vaguely remember reading about some sort of interior upgrade package.

Are we driving the same car? I haven't noticed anything weird about the center arm rest. Granted, it isn't as nice as the armrest is some cars, but it is certainly better than cars that don't have a sliding armrest. I knew this going into the purchase. Mine seems to hold its position without any problem. Also, this obsession with the fake stitching on the door panels and the door panels in general seems way out of proportion to the "crime." It's hardly noticeable unless obsessive auto journalists point it out.

I agree. I think Saturn made some smart decisions about the interior overall, particularly when you think of the dash top, instrument cluster, and cloth pillars. Given that, I agree that with just a little work these problems can be taken care of. If this is the type of cost cutting they had to do to get 3.6 and everything else into this price range, they did pretty well.

It's funny because my center armrest isn't plastic. It more like rubber and it stays in either position I put it in. I find it rather comfortable as I drive with my right arm leaning on it all the time.

Default Honestly I don't relate to the criticism >>

The center arm rest is more like rubber than hard plastic - It's fairly soft as is most the interiot in the aura. Sure it would be nicer if it was padded w/ leather or something - but I don't dind it to be uncomfortable at all, it does slide forward and back - it doesn't 'lock' but it seems to stay put fine for me.

I agree these two areas (center and side armrests) could be improved - but the are no worse or less comfortable than the arm rests on the mercedes c230 I traded for the aura).

Personally, I have zero issues with the interior, but don't take anyone's word for it (good or bad). Go see and test drive it for yourself and make your own decision.

The armrest will be one of the changes for 2008. I do not mind the current one, I think the door insert is a bigger issue.

Is it going to be more like the one in the Outlook? That would be a welcome improvement, but Saturn shouldn't stop there.

When you just look at the interior, gmhashope is right. Your eyes do not go to the center armrest. They go to the door. Whatever work that was done right in the interior is harder to notice because of this.

If they do change it in '08, people will probably think the overall interior is nicer because you will be able to focus on the good gauges and overall design. These and a few other small changes (should we start the locking glove box conversation again ) will make this car go from competitive to clearly the best choice. I hope they use the Outlook as a lesson. I see my dealers selling many every weekend because you get a near luxury vehicle for a good price. I would like to see the Aura sell the same.

I think the improved door panels will only come with the leather, but could be wrong on this.

The middle armrest on our XR and XE is made of SOFT RUBBER and does NOT move!
You guys complaining about the middle armrest have hard plastic?
When did you purchase your vehicles? Wonder if that was an early production run thing?
We got ours in Dec. & Jan.

Mine isn't hard plastic either. It is like some other people have said...kind of a hard rubber. Works just fine for me.

It's a plastic armrest with a hard rubber cover. Either way, it's certainly not soft. Perhaps they have improved the detents on recent models so that it doesn't slide so easily. My friend's XR was built last fall and the armrest moves with very little pressure placed on it. That, along with a truly soft cover for the armrest, certainly needs to be part of the 2008 model year fixes.

If it was soft enough, I might consider it. I'd rest my head on the armrest in the rear seat, but alas, it isn't there....
