Default 99 SL2 drove through high water wont crank

hey guys i drove my liltle 5 speed sl2 through a high puddle during a flash flood the engine stalled. towed it home and it will not start or crank. i drained oil and there was a lot of water in there and still no crank.

i took plugs out and i can see water in there holes how do i remove it? is it possible to get that water out and it cranking again? What about removing the belt and trying to turn her by hand?

thank you

Somehow I lost the reply I posted. Jack up one front wheel and rotate it by hand with the trans in 5th gear, spark-plugs out. Put some oil in through the plug holes. Use plenty, too much may make an oily mess, but can't do any damage if the plugs are out. After enough rotating to get most of the oil out I would take compression. No need to take the belt off.

Ah, I see, I didn't lose my rely, this is a duplicate thread.

I hope the motor isn't hydraulic'd( motors break when they try to compress water in their cylinders because they wanted to be a submarine).

GEt a shop vac.

I assume if water got that high, it got into all your electronics/starter, anything electrical.

A little water in the plug holes is easy to fix- the rest isn't.

Just pull all the plugs out, and then crank the engine, any excess water will blow out the plug holes, crank for 30 sec or so , as starter will have almost no load. Check plug conditions and replace if necessary, reinstall plugs and wires and try a restart.

I cant get the enging to turn the starter just clicks and engine will not turn by hand. I have the plugs out oil drained and valve cover off i even tried to pop the clutch car just stops. So if i throw the clutch in 5th gear jack the driver side up and turn the wheel it should turn the engine? how hard is taking a head off the engine?

If the plugs are out and the engine is still locked up then most likely mechanical damage has occurred like a bent connecting rod, Most likely the engine will need to be replaced.

Ouch. It takes a decent bit of water to hydro lock and engine usually, but if you can't get it to turn by hand.....

Have you tried turning it over with the crank (pulley) bolt with the plugs out? It might also be worth checking for any locked up accessories. It's a long shot but I've heard people claim it's happened.

Sure, they can be rebuilt. The problem is that a decent rebuild will cost about as much as the car is worth, even if you provide a lot of "free labor". If you like the car and intend to keep it I recommend a rebuild (even if you have to start with a used short-block), just don't expect to get your money back on a rebuild. Another consideration here is what other damage was done by soaking in water. I gotta ask... how high was this water? On earlier SL2s the air intake is 18-20" off the ground!

Sounds like your engine is history. If you hit the water fairly quick it gets easily in to the intake and kiss it bye bye

would a sohc engine work for the car? I know i got the double overheads but i found a real good price on a single overhead.

It will work, but with what you'd have to do to get it to work it would be more trouble than it's worth. Look for a DOHC.

Hello, Do you have a cold air intake like an AEM that has the filter down low ahead of the front left wheel. If so that is what happened. It hydro locked. Sorry for your trouble. Rick
