I'm still kinda waiting to see what "normal" will be -- should find out in the next tank or so.

Bringing the car home in Jan, 99% highway on that long trip from VA to PA, I got 33.8 MPG. I was not super-focused on maintaining mileage, but was being extra gentle with the car because it was new to me and I wasn't sure how much I could trust it yet.

Due to a surgery had by my wife just a week later, I was working from home most of the time, and I barely drove the car at all until until just about a month or so ago, when I started trying to return to a normal-ish work schedule. (As of this moment I've only put just over 2K on the car since I got it.)

Since I started driving the car again, it's been A/C weather, I've probably been a bit less careful with the throttle, milage on a given tank has been as low as 22.3 and as high as 27.3 with mixed (but mostly highway) driving. Average has been 25.7 during this time.

But I did ECTS (definitely needed), thermostat (maybe needed), and spark plugs last week (OMG needed). The spark plugs were the most worn of any I've ever removed from any car I've owned. (and I've had a lot of cars)

I've never actually taken the time to check the gap on plugs I was replacing in the past, so I suppose I can't *prove* that, but OTOH no plugs that I ever pulled before had electrodes which were visibly disintegrated to the point where I got curious about their gap, either. Honestly the condition of the plugs makes me question my 33.8 MPG calculation on the trip to bring the car home. I use an app to track it now though, so less room to screw up (if indeed I did).

So I'm interested to see what happens with the mileage now, and moreso to see what I can get out of it when it gets cold and I don't need A/C anymore.

From reading the thread here it sounds like I'm likely to land in mid to upper 30's without crazy mods or radical changes in driving habit, and I'm quite happy if that turns out to be so.

I drive a 94 auto SC2. I've been tracking my mileage since March 2011 and have averaged 28.1mpg. Best mileage I've had was 32.9 I do a lot of city driving and some short 10-15 minute highway trips regularly. I've been using the A/C a lot recently due to the consistant 90* 90% humidity we've been having.

With the gear swap I personally think the twin cam engine is just as fuel efficient as the single cammer... I have little doubt that you could crack 45 mpg. My car is on the way out and I wish I had some longer all highway tanks, especially with AC off. I'm thinking close to 50 is possible if speeds are kept below 65.

I have been getting 36-38mpg in my daily commuting for a very long time now, depending upon weather, season and traffic.

However I just did the gear swap late last week. Should be interesting to see what difference it makes. 2-3 fills will tell the story.

2002 sl2, 5spd around 36.334 for the month I've had it mostly up an down the hills here, rural, with some highway.

It's actually a touch better than the auto SL1 I had due to the fact I can cruise in top gear and not have to mash the gas to get up the hills. It averaged about 34 - 35.5.

On a 6k mile road trip from SoCal to MN and back, I averaged 38.5mpg's best tank was a tad over 42mpg, in my 98 SL2 HAI, fresh fluids, ETCS, alignment, water pump.T-stat. Also loaded with luggage, cooler/snacks/drinks/ice, my son and toys/car seat/stroller, and tools/gas can, so it was weighted down a bit, when I got back to CA I cleaned everything out except a few toys and tools and damn what a huge difference in performance, I way over packed for the trip and could have left 1/2 the weight at home and saved even more mpg!!

In short best tank hwy 42mpg's, mixed city hwy was 36mpg's, ac almost always on!!

. So i'm asking for you to state the year, model, transmission, mileage, and mods to get a better idea of what these cars can do.

Borders on thread necromancy for how old the original post is but sharing for posterity..

1999 SL, 5spd, 180k, no mods all stock. I get a consistent 29-30mpg (never less, ever) around town, where I tend to drive kind of easy. This is the original EPA figure for city but beats the new figures. This can include moderate hills, 40mph sections and similar.

Highway i've gotten as bad as 33mpg but thats rare, average 35mpg, sometimes will get 37-38mpg. I drive a consistent 77mph typically everywhere when possible, I can reliably expect 35mpg on normal trips unless it's extreme winds or such. I've never tried driving slower, i'm always in a hurry when going between cities. My typical highway run is 240 miles with the rest of the tank of gas burned in the cities, done like that I get 320-330 miles out of a tank needing 9.5 gallons to fill absolutely like clockwork. I can set my watch by it practically.

My 1995 SL2 auto has about 5,000 miles on the new engine so far (142,000 on the car). Last highway trip (containing two mountain passes) I got just over 30 mpg with all 4 of us in the car, the trunk completely filled with luggage and other stuff, and the A/C on. I don't think that's a bad figure considering the load. It may not seem as nice as some of you single cam/5-speed owners, but it sure beats my Suburban's 16 mpg.

Also, my car itself is all stock, save for CD player and speakers. The engine has been bored 0.020" over with KB-Silvolite pistons, however. Definitely has more power than the old POS engine that burned oil like crazy, constantly fouled plugs, and the lifters rattled like a PowerStroke.

And it hasn't lost a drop of oil yet!

My commute is 60 miles one way to work, with 80% of it being at 75+ MPH and the other 20% being some stop and go but generally 50 mph (about 15 miles of the commute).

Go ahead and take a look at my link (it is my maintenance and fuel economy sheet). I see seasonal trends where my fuel economy dips in the winter and recovers in the summer. I also can account for some of my bad trips fuel economy wise. Overall, I have 195 data points since January 2010.
