I have to think that geographic location has a lot to do with the MPG differences between us city folk versus you higher mileage gettin country folk. Population density has to have a correlation with the length of stretches of road between stop signs and stop lights. Plus there are differences in hilly terrain areas vs. farm country.
I live in densely populated Connecticut which is also generally hilly. My usual trek to work has many stops/intersections to deal with and when I do take the highway, there are many climbs and downgrades.

Lately getting 24 mpg on average with my DOHC wagon in the colder weather and lots of densely populated stop and go.

For instance -I am in the dark purpley-blue area. 500+ persons per square mile.
It would be interesting to have Saturnfans report their mileage and population density area at the same time.

No doubt the traffic and conditions play a big role, as well as drive cycles and outside temp. I'm in a population dense area and still view 30 MPG as the lower end of MPG returns, but we don't get much in the way of single digit temps either.

Short trips are terrible for average MPG, since you have so much wasted energy on warm up times. Combine that with frigid cold and there isn't a lot you can do without block heaters or something.

In my experience - you should get 34-36 mpg.

Unless your foot is digital - that is - at idle or stomped to the firewall.

...

My SO recently changed employers so she is now driving less than half of her usual 400 miles per week. Her mileage dropped about 2 mpg.

Funiny thing - she gets within 1 mpg - regardless of which car she drives. SL2 / SC2 auto or manual - it's pretty much 32 mpg on short trips, more on longer trips.

I rarely check mileage - because I drive far less.

I' m back in the garage fixing a Saturn.

She's out there breaking them.

35.1mpg. All driving was on local rural roads and temps were as high as 20f and as low as -6f. So yea, it was or is real cold right now.

After an average of 19mpg all winter, I think I finally figured out what a good chunk of the problem was.

So last August I had to buy a new gas cap due to me being a little forgetful and forgetting to put it back on after leaving the pump, ended up loosing it on the road somewhere. Got a new one at autozone, put it on and didn't really think much about it.

Now looking at my mileage history it's been consistently going down a little bit since August (the same time I had to but a new gas cap) so I knew the poor mileage couldn't be due to the colder weather alone. So back in February I thought that just maybe the gas cap was somehow negatively effecting mileage so I bought a new OE one online and the difference was pretty huge. I went from 18mpg with the old cap to 22mpg with the new cap. +4 mpg difference. Now the increase might just be a coincidence but I'm pretty sure the cap I bought last August wasn't very good and kept a getting worse over time, somehow reducing mileage.

I also replaced my broken thermostat with a new one and mileage went up again to 25mpg, another decent jump. Still not great numbers but I need new tires, and I know the exhaust is leaking somewhere, so hopefully when those get fixed I'll see even better mileage

Even with imperial gallons, that's way up there at the top for most Saturn owners. What kind of drive speeds/distance/etc do you usually deal with?

I can't remember any trip that I've taken where I didn't hit some type of traffic snarls or something that would impact MPG. But I have no doubt I could hit 50+ MPG with US gallons if I could stick to the speed limit on a trip and avoid traffic issues. To see a DOHC car do even better leads me to think that trip conditions are nearly the perfect conditions.

How are you calculating this?

For my SC2, I'm at almost one year of tracked mpgs. I must be driving it slightly more aggressively on average than I drove my SL2

The SC2 has a lower drag coefficient and the new design rollover follower train valve and should bring better MPGs

Are you sure you don't mean kilometers per gallon?

Because I gotta be honest, you're not getting 56 MPG unless your car is running so lean that it's about to explode.

Ya, that's not right for sure. In metric the calculation is litres/100km.

To calculate US MPG uses the formula below.

Quote:
(km driven * 0.621371) / (liters consumed / 3.78541)
IMP MPG uses this formula

Quote:
(km driven * 0.621371) / (liters consumed / 4.54609)

...
Current rides
2001 SL1 MT (417,500 km @ 05/2018)
1999 SL2 MT (260,870 km @ 05/2018)
2011 Suburban LT (111,176 km @ 05/2018)

total KM dived by liters used give u your liters per 100km then times that by 4.55 which gives you your KPG ( KMPG ) and if u times it by 0.62 which is your Miles per gallon so the True MPG would be 41.52 miles per gallon roughly

You should probably us the US gallon (3.78541 liters) so the majority are comparing apples to apples.

I've never seen it calculated that way before. Just to clarify, is this how you are calculating....

Quote:
400 km
40 litres

(400/40)*4.54609=45.46 km/imp gallon
45.46*0.621371=28.25 mpg

same as ...

(400*0.621371)/(40/4.54609)
248.5484 mi / 8.7988 IMP Gal
28.25 Imp MPG

...
Current rides

Are you using the gas gauge to determine liters used?

I could see how you'd get that mpg with hypermiling techniques. Great first post
Are you doing any of the other mods? Some folks lean out the mixture with warm air intakes, etc.

The most I've done is add a few PSI to the tires. I used to run 38 front, 35 rear

No other mods. My tires are at about 35 psi. I think the biggest factor is shifting at 2000-2200 rpm and never going faster than about 95 kph or a tad under 60mph. I also live in a very flat area and do mostly highway driving.
