I've been averaging about 30MPG combined lately.

My commute has changed to include more freeway driving, which definitely helps.

Would have been 3 or 4 mg better if bad bosch plug wires hadn't been causing misses.

No coasting or drafting. car completely full to the brim. SOHC 5 spd, LRR tires at 35, all full synthetic fluids, watching TPS on scangage, insulated hot air intake at 150 to 170. no ac or cruise control.

PS: if i was to drive at 45 mph steady on flat road, i'd get 60 to 65 mpg i bet

About 26 city and 40 highway(at 2600 rpm) without the a/c on and the windows up.
About 20 city and 36 highway(at 2600 rpm) with the a/c on. It sucks fuel like a turbo diesel in city traffic.

A person will always get better mileage in Texas. It's nothing but straight and flat freeway as far as the eye can see.

Texas is prett different. I've been through there a few times and remember seeing a 75mph speed sign. Also, I've heard there is an 80mph somewhere but have never seen it.

Coming from the south, I've heard from people who ride their bicycles cross country that its all good and fine til they hit west Texas. Then then pain begins.

'96 SW2 automatic ~185k, in the family since new, maintained by the book.

34-37 highway, 28-30 city/mixed. Occasionally did better when the car was newer -- got 40 on a couple of long trips.

Averaged 37 from SC to CA last year, heavily loaded. Burns about a quart of oil every 2 tanks (~700mi), has been doing this a long time. Otherwise still runs perfectly.

Years ago, housemate's SL1 manual did about 40 on ski trips.

I just got the best MPG I've ever gotten. I got 44.6mpg at 2600-2700rpm. I had the a/c off and the front windows rolled down halfway. I thing the motor likes hot weather; it was a humid 95 degree's.

I'm all for better mileage, but I ain't driving 45 on the highway. That's dangerous (think rear-end collision).

the 45-50 speed was on a secondary road not on the highway. normally i go 55-60 on the highway when the speed limit is 55-65

First off, this is the S-series forum, NOT the VUE forum. The VUE is considerably bigger than the S-series, which can explain things.

also, I don't think there's ever been a v4 ANYWHERE, unless you're talking motorcycles.

+1 . It's what you do with what you got that counts. When I describe the S-Series to people, I tell them it was developed in the late 1980's with MPG in mind. It's not an MPG rock-star out of the box, but it's *brimming* with potential in the right hands. An MPG-jewel in the rough.

96 SC2. Automatic. 158,000 miles right now.

29ish in the winter. 33-34mpg in summer. Best I've ever gotten was close to 37 but that was only once and has never been repeated.
