1994 SL2
Default Re: BEFORE your Saturn,.... what did you drive?

my first vehicle was a 1988 Toyota pickup that I totalled 4 months later, about as long as I had my license...boy I miss that truck.

After that I inherited a 1984 Buick Regal that was a battle tank, would do 0-50 in 5.5 minutes. Drove that till I got out of high school and bought my 1995 S-10 4.3 5 speed and put the regal up for a v-8 project that never materialized.

I instead put all that money in the S-10 lowered it and all the usual stuff. True duals custom made off the factory connector to the headers. Chrome all under the hood, 15x10 52 spoke Mclean triple chrome reverse offset for the bow legged look. 205 50 15 T/A Euro Radials wrapped them. I had some really good times in that truck at car shows and cruises. Biggest show was Nopi in 97-98 and mini truckin of course. 1998 was the end of the show truck as it was stolen while i was out of town and parked at a friends house. Came back with no wheels no exhaust no intake. So I decided to raise it back up and it has been the same ever since. I have over 250,000 on the truck and its still a daily driver 100+ miles a day back and forth to work and pull the boat to the river.

not counting the cars I had while married cause they are all gone now that I am divorced. ( got rid of them so she couldnt have them...regret it now)

So here I am working on this 1994 SL2 DOHC. Got alot done but there is other things it needs...my mom bought this car brand new and it has only been driven on the highway back and forth to work.

...
1994 SL2 "work in progress" 214,000 and no headliner...

I drove a 1994 Mercury Topaz which had about 160,000 on it. The water pump went out on it (a $25 part) and I ended up donating it to my cousin this past summer. It was a good ride, but really wanted a new vehicle! I now own a 1998 Saturn SL2 with about 90k on it. Pretty good shape but needs some work.

Default Re: BEFORE your Saturn,.... what did you drive?

for me lets see

72 Vw Bug-really learned stick in this one and was my parents car basicly it was drive this or walk and save up for your own

77 Datsun 280Z-probably about the most fun car I've had especially when it was raining but had constant problems with it (like clock work no problems for around 2 months then nothing but problems for 2 months)

88 Chevy Celebrity-nothing special about this one really and pretty dependable

95 Honda Civic-given by my grandma when she quit driving and because it was a "better car then what I had" though I never really had problems with the Celebrity though I ended up in 2 accidents not my fault in this car, broken into 2x and within a month had it stolen 2x so I finally dumped it but it did get me across the country and back without a hitch

83 Chevy Silverado 1500-biggest pos I've ever owned paid way to much for it and ended up spending nearly 3x as much trying to get the thing decent but still had problems with it. managed a whopping ~7 miles to the gallon with it and blew the engine about 3 months after buying it.

93 Saturn SL2-few problems but doing alot of catch up stuff on it among other stuff

Default Re: BEFORE your Saturn,.... what did you drive?

Here we go, in this order:

88 Dodge Daytona - black - T-Tops baby! Great 1st car.

92 Chrysler Lebaron convertible - red, black top, white vinyl interior Made it to 175k miles on the dot when the 604 trans finally died.

71 VW super beetle. Much to learn.

74 VW Beetle. Much more to learn.

73 Chevelle Laguna - Red with black swivel bucket seats. Preformer 350, 700r4 conversion, 373 & a Posi. Vette rallys with 15x10 in the back. Anybody here ever raced on James P. Cole Boulevard?

73 Chevelle Malibu 4-door - origionally mint green but painted to chevy indigo metalic blue. I restored this one from stock. It was some girls highschool car before I got it. Scroll down 2/3 of the way to Limited Edition 7" single, hope you like Detroit Techno.
http://www.adultperiod.com/releases/releases.htm

Draw line here, finished college, got married, got a real job.

98 Dodge Intrepid. - Wife's car. Very good commuter.

98 Eagle Talon TSIAWD 5-speed - bone stock and all black. Ask anyone who ever owned one of these and they will say "It was an amazing car, when it was running." This is where I learned the lesson if I am going to daily drive a higher mileage older car, make sure it is a simple one. A tranny rebuild cost me 3000. I was gonna keep it as a toy but I was sick of the sight of it. I had my own coffee cup at the Mitsubishi dealer.

01 Chrysler 300M - Silver. Wife's car 1st, I inherited when she got the next one and the talon was sent to greener pastures. Best non-saturn I have ever owned. Miss it every time we take a car trip. She was immaculate and I kept it that way.

04 Mini Cooper S 6-speed - Wife's car. 3 years and 30k miles later, I sold it for 2750 less than I purchased it for. Awesome rocket. Only live once right?

Draw another line here. Have 1st baby. Infant seats don't fit well in a Cooper.

07 Dodge Caliber - Sunburst Orange. Very good car. Exellent for getting groceries and hauling 1 kiddo around. Problem was that when we ordered it new <never again>, it took 2-weeks for 16-weeks to get. This left us with only the 300m for 2 months.

Even when you are 30, I guess you aren't too old to bum a car off your Dad. I borrowed his '84 BMW 318i stick shift that I helped restore for a month. I was living in Detroit suburbs and commuting to Windsor Ontario daily. Just a heads-up, when you cross international borders in a borrowed car, that's a red flag. I was searched 4-times in 1 week. I realized I had to buy a beater while the Caliber was on order.

01 Saturn SL - 5-speed - milk truck white. 3 options, AC, painted bumpers, premium radio. Crank windows baby. I purchased it with 138k from a priest/former mechanic figuring this guy has to be honest. Hmmmm. Never trust a priest who swears in front of you. He did me a favor and topped off the Dexkool with ethylene glycol before I picked it up.

I figured I would sell the saturn and keep the 300m for years to come. After doing the basic fixes on the SL, I fell back in love with driving stick.... something my luxurious 300m could never provide. I decided to sell the 300m and use the cash to fix-up the SL.

The SL is basically a new car now. She got leather seats, leather steering wheel, functional cruise control, a reman engine and clutch at 180k, new brakes, shocks, axle shafts, barings, tie rods, radiator, heater core, practically every sensor, etc....... If it spins and it isn't the tranny, I have replaced it. I figure if I am going to leave the country every day I want to make sure I am going to get back. I am working on getting a spare tranny that I can get the diff pin welded ahead of time.

I purchased an '01SC2 green automatic with a spun bearing as a project car. I replaced the usual wear items, put on new tires, installed a used engine with 74k miles, and sold her to a college girl. She loves it. All normal maintenance was done so all she has to do is keep the oil topped off. It made me a great spare car for about 6k miles.

Last line, baby #2 on due in August. Is the Caliber shrinking?

Next on the list will be to sell the Caliber and get a late model Chrysler Minivan for the missus..... once Chrysler gets back to business. Now that the SL is reliable, I plan to keep it for many years to come. Somebody once asked a friend of mine who owns a trucking business how many miles the trucks go before they are dead. She replied "as many miles as you want them to." Kind of applies to our Saturns as well.

I see many more years and miles with me commuting in my SL. Perhaps it will be my daughter's 1st car some day. She is 2 now.

Cheers.
