Default How to check oil pressure relief valve?

Is there a definitive test?

And - if it tests bad - where can I buy one? I' ve spent the whole afternoon chasing - and these parts guys act like I asked for a can of Yak paté....

Which car? I wouldn't want to give incorrect specs.

For example; '00 SL2/SC2/SW2 SOHC/DOHC using 5W 30 EC II Oil (with Starburst Symbol), pressure setting at 90°C, (195°F) coolant temperature at idle RPM - 13.0 psi min. (standard), 9.0 psi min.(service limit). At 2k rpm, 36 psi min. (standard), 29 psi min. (service limit). Cold engine, up to 2500 rpm - 80 psi max. This presumes an oil pressure gauge is adapted to fit in place of the oil pressure sending unit. The oil pressure relief valve is, if I'm not mistaken, a permanently fixed spring and steel ball. No adjustment is possible. Using an oil pressure gauge adapted to fit (M14 x 1.5mm) the oil pressure port will tell you more.

The part Waiex191 linked is the bypass relief that is used in all s-series cars. There is NO way to test just the pressure setting with the valve in place.

Take the timing cover off and clean it up then fill the recess above the valve with paint thinner and see if the valve leaks all the solvent in any reasonable time period such as 2 hours. Keep the cover in the upright position. If it does not leak then try and push it open BY HAND with a flat nosed punch, do not pound on it, usually you can not push it open if it is good condition. The bypass has a flat disk held against the seat by a rather stiff spring. The push test is checking for a broken or weak spring. Design is: cracks open at 72 psi and is full open at <85psi oil pressure. With the car running and a mechanical gauge attached on cold oil start you can see that it is operating within design. This test requires a perfect condition timing cover and new oil pump gears.

These things are not known to fail unless jammed open by chunks of foreign material.

I gotta ask... why are you wanting to test it, what are the symptoms/problem you are investigating?

Cancel this, I just looked at your other thread.

I stand corrected. Thanks guys.

I tried a bleed thru test as OldNuc advised. It flows thru immediately.

Toast!

GOOD!!

There' s nothing worse than an undiagnosed problem.

I can now put this back together with confidence.

Although - I did decide to go ahead and drop them engine out. I wracked my knuckles enough getting the cover off. As clean and rust free as this old girl is - dropping it out the bottom will be a piece of cake compared to attempting to properly clean the RTV off the block whilst in the engine compartment.

Pulled a cover off another ( cooked) engine.

Was able to push open the valve easily by hand on both. Probably what cooked the spare engine.

Called and got NAPA to get the part in today - but no luck on the removal/ installation tool.

Any good tricks for removing the valve from the cover??

Block of OAK and a pry bar underneath. Disassemble the oil pump completely out of the cover and then heat the relief valve and surrounding aluminum up to 200F or so, relief will push out easily.

What failed your car is the thoroughly plugged filter and the weakened relief valve spring. If the pump recess is scored then that just adds to lower oil pressure.

Is this what you're looking at checking and replacing? The only way to check pressures that indirectly tells you if the oil pressure relief valve failed is to run an oil pressure test with a pressure gauge.

That worked. Propane torch then a few drops of water on the valve to shock and shrink. Popped out easily.

Got a new one at NAPA.

You almost feel like you should pay way more than 5 bucks for such a critical component.

Like the NASA astronaut said " Just remember- we fly the bird that came from the lowest bidder".........

Thanks guys.!!!

Every engine manual i've read suggests renewing those at rebuild time.

The procedure seems iffy, and i always declined.

Good Work, Online !

Life isn't done with me yet.

I ordered the wrong part number - and got a part that looked just like it - but was too small.

Ordered the right part number ( AC delco 25014006) - and took the old part with me - and once again - it's the wrong part. Too small.

Broke down - went to the Chevy dealer - they looked it up - and showed me the parts breakdown schematic drawing.

Ordered that part -- 12597920. It should be here in the morning.

Had them check the AC delco part number 25014006 - they said that' s for the transmission cooler....

We' ll see in the morning.

Saturn part number start with 21, the entire engine is a Saturn assembly. A 12 is GM generic. Any part that fits will be a 21 or 12 except some clips and fasteners.

Got the part from the Chevy dealer. The RIGHT part!

Will try to get it back together and tested for oil pressure before re- installing.

Got the engine buttoned up last night. Good to let the Permatex set overnight.

Put oil in, and hooked up battery. ( drivetrain on stand) Removed oil press sender and hooked up test gauge. Cranked it over in 10 second grinds.

Third time was the charm!

Oil pressure indicated at 45 PSI.

I' m one happy camper.

Going to clean engine just a bit, and re- install.

It' s going to be one nice ride.

Curious when you saw the valve was bad why not just grab one of the other dozens lying around the junk yard?

1. They are a bit of work to get at.

2. For 20 bucks (dealer) why not just get a new one?
