Dizzy Saturn Sl1 updates and questions

My Saturn sl1 has had a lot of shifting issues I havenít had the money or time to fix it but lately it has been doing good and shifting smooth as long as I let it warm up before I drive it does great which I donít get why it only does it when itís driven while warming up.
I have found on here that the S-Series likes to burn oil because of sticky rings and I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to free them so the car wonít burn any more oil without having to take my motor apart and that is a cheap easy thing to do. Iíve also noticed after my last oil change it ran super smooth but as I drive more it begins to run a little worse any ideas on that as well.

2001 Saturn SL1 Near 192k and going strong

Site note. Thank you for all the support on my previous posts and on this one as well.

Is this an automatic transmission needing warmup or a stick shift?
If automatic, then, when the engine is up to operating temperature, what level is the transmission fluid showing on the transmission dipstick? Is it bright RED or dark, and smells sorta sweet or burnt?
Maybe you are low on Dextron III compatible fluid.
By the way, when was the last time (and mileage) the transmission fluid and filter were changed out? Should be around every 30,000 miles.

The problem with the oil rings cooking on is due to the lack of drainback holes never provided on the Saturn engines right from the factory for decades.

I have reversed oil consumption in many of my cars over time by switching to full synthetic oil. Cheap Walmart Super Tech brand always and never anything more pricey. Stick to 3,000 - 4,500 mile oil change intervals. You can also do a 500-1,000 mile interval as a cleaning measure. This is at worst a harmless and ineffective attempt.
...again this is just my personal experience and I have no ability or knowledge to make any guarantees.

OP's previous thread - auto trans
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=238477

I'd start with checking the transmission fluid (ATF) level. When was the ATF and filter last changed?

Check engine oil level frequently and top off as needed. Some folks have varying amounts of success with piston soaks or additives to the oil and oil changes

Oil burning is generality attributed to the oil control ring getting stuck.

Other possibilities are:
  • worn valve stem seals - repair involves pulling the head (you're into "may as well rebuild" territory)
  • PCV valve - look up "fixed orifice PCV valve" on this site. Lots of mfrs make a PCV vavle that fits but the spring tension is incorrect, apparently
