Default New to the board, here's my Saturn!! *pic*

Hello everybody!! I just joined the site, it looks good. Im from Manitoba, and I own a 1996 Saturn 1.9 SOHC 5 speed. It had almost 250,000 km's on it now. The only mods ive done to it are the rims, (205/55R15) and an MP3 player. Besides that, I dont plan on doing anything else to it. Its just my daily driver.

It gets about 39 mpg in the city, and around 43-45 on the highway. Is that normal? Higher or Lower than most 96 5 speed sohc's?

Overall I think Saturns are pretty good!! And if your carefull when its -40 ouside, the dent resistant panels are a nice touch to keeping the car look new!

On a side note, it does consume a bit of oil now and then, but other than that, im pretty happy with it.

Pretty car. Welcome. The wheels are great and I have always preferred the charcoal bumpers over the painted ones. They are so much more practical and break up the monochrome look a bit.
It's a tendency of the cars to consume oil. Do a search or go to the specific S Series forums and see what people are saying about their car's oil consumption and certain problems they might be having with them.
Great site, great people and your mpg sounds better than average.
Got lots of wide open spaces out there?

Thanks for the reply guys! I did do a bit of research about the oil consumption a while back, I just forget alot of the info. I'll look into it again.

What is everybody else getting with the 1.9L 5 speed?

Your mileage is a little on the high side, I'd say, which is good. And you say it only consumes a little oil, which is very good.

It should be noted that the 1.9l was the only engine in these cars, there just happens to be a SOHC and DOHC version.

Yes they are!! I ran across a guy in Saskatchewan who had them on his Honda Civic. I got the 4 rims and 4 new tires for $650 cdn (about $500 US).

Not a bad deal, not to mention they make the car look way better

sorry, but prepare for a cracked head sometime in the car's life. '95 and '96 SOHC are prone to cracking.

When do you figure they crack? I have 250,000 KM'S on mine right now and it seems to be running fine. Its not the most refined/quietest engine out there, but it gets the job done.

There were some late 95 early 96 that had heads with what were called "pour problems" from the factory.
The 95 I bought last year had the head replaced twice in two weeks at the 34,000 mark and under warranty. It now has 120,000 miles on it.
Ask your retailer to do a service history, they'll have a record of your car's Saturn service regardless of which Saturn dealer did the repairs. It's possible the problem has either never appeared and won't or it's been repaired. This way you will know for certain.
Check your oil regularly as well as coolant for contaminants [anti freeze in oil, oil in anti freeze], you should be fine. Check out the tech section and do a search for symptoms and problems.
Nearly 100% of the 1st Gen Neons required their head gaskets to be replaced at 60,000 according to the Mopar site "Allpar". The Saturn head problems appear to be far less common, but cracking does happen.

If they are 4x100 bolt pattern, then yes. (At least on 1995-1999's) Not sure of the bolt pattern for the earlier and later years of Saturns. Im guessing they will be the same though.

Every single S-Series has the 4x100 bolt pattern, so most wheels with that pattern will fit. Some have different hub diameters, however, so one should be aware of that.
